Got a couple thousand... what to buy?

Basically I've decided to splurge on a new system. I'm willing to spend around $5,000. Maybe 6 or 7 if it's necessary.

I'm thinking about getting dual opertons but I have no idea how well that would run for games and I have no idea what kind of mobo to get. I also want to use a dual monitor system with two dell 2001fp's. That's all I know that I want. What else should I get?

Athlon 64 FX-53 939 pin
Asus A8V Deluxe 1005.021 BIOS PCI/AGP lock
2 Western Digital 74GB Raptors
2 512MB Corsair 3200XLPRO
BFG GeForce 6800 GT OC 256MB
Toshiba SDR 5112 DVD/CD-RW Writer
Toshiba SDR 5372 Dual Layer DVD±RW, CD-RW Writer
QTechnology 460W PSU
CPNS7000-ALCu CPU Cooler
Antec P160 Case, Windows XP PRO SP1
Zonet Router 1 WAN + 4 LAN + 1 Parallel Port PrintServer+ Firewall
JBL Platinum Speakers W/subwoofer

a lot of the parts are other user opinions, change them if you want.

Hmmmmm.... i could have some fun designing a system for that much 🙂, but I don't know how you are going to be able to spend 5000 or more on a computer without just buying parts to make it cost more.
If you will be gaming, hold out until january and then get an nforce 4 SLI system with dual 6800 ultra's, and an fx55, or dual opterons if they have sli nforce 4 boards out for S940. for ram, just get a gig of OCZ EL platinum Revision 2. Get a really nice surround sound system with enough power to cause permenant damage to your house, and an awsome sound card, although i can't recomend a sound system or card either because i don't know much about either. You could get 4 74gb raptors in either a raid 1+0 array or a jbod. A nice Lian Li case with a PC power and cooling power supply.
If you are really going to buy a system with all that stuff in it, it will be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO fast ..... *drools all over keyboard* me wants it 🙂.

for 5 Grand id do this for single CPU
FX-55
asus mobo
BFG GeForce 6800 GT OC 256MB
4x 300GB Maxtor HDDs in raid 5
promise raid 5 card
2x 1gb corsair 3200LL
Plextor 12x dual layer DVD burner
liteon DVD drive
OCZ or Antec 500w powersupply
CPNS7000-ALCu CPU Cooler
Lain li PC V2000B case
Audigy 2 ZS
klipsch 5.1 speakers

for Dual CPU
dual opteron 250s
Tyan dual CPU mobo
4x 512mb Corsaid 3200 LL
everything else the same

Nah, the Opterons are plenty fast at 2.0 ghz dual.

Dual 246s.
1-2 gigabytes of DDR 3200 ECC registered RAM for BOTH CPUs.
Tyan Dual Opteron W series.
3*74 Raptors in RAID 5
RAID 5 controller card
6800 Ultra
Powerstream 520 Watt PSU

Man...

You are stupid if you spend $7000.00 on a computer. Otherwise I think you're just tying to draw attention.

I would buy a 50"-60" LCD TV top of the line. then build a computer with whatever you had left over.

And blind yourself? Or you mean have a wireless keyboard and mouse and sit 10 feet away from the screen ?

I'd get:

Nventiv Mach 2, or Vapochill
FX-55
SLI Mobo
2 6800Ultras
2 74 gig raptors (or maybe go scsi)
2 20 inch lcds
Audigy 2 zs or M-Audio 7.1 Revolution or Both
Onkio S770 or something for speakers

Of course for a mere fraction of the cost you can get a rig that'll be still amazing. I wouldnt recommend spending $5g on a computer since in 1 year it'll be worth $2g tops. It's better to build a comp for $1.5 grand now, add 1.5grand to upgrade 1 year from now, then another 1.5. For 4.5 grand you'll have almost the fastest computer every year instead of having the fastest computer this year, and slower next year and even slower 2 years from now. It only makes sense to spend this much on a computer if you are so rich that you can afford to spend that much every year to have a top of the line system. Otherwise, like I said, a person with a "lowly" A64 3200+ and 6800GT right now will surpass you very soon by upgrading strategically.

I was just saying. Getting a monster TV is money better spent than a computer. And yes I have a wireless keyboard and mouse, I sit about 2 meters away from my TV and LOVE the picture. There's slight ghosting but the picture size and full suround sound more than makes up for it.

amd fx-51 650
prometia and lian li case 1000
don;t know fx 51 mobos 200 budget
4x74 gig raptors raid em up $700
2 6800 ultras $1050
2x250 gig WD's raid 0 storage 300
4 gigs of pc-4000 800
case mods 100
200 pc power and cooling psu
=4800 and EXTREME overclocking with the prometia😀 that would be okay I guess not up to my requirments for a system though:shocked:

Get a Dell and take the rest and fly down to Rio. Be sure to pack your digital camera and take lot of pictures of the girls.

Edit: Don't forget your VISA and passport. They won't let you in Brazil without it.

Yes, I'm trying to draw attention because if you look at my posts you would notice I'm a frequent visitor to these boards. I really care what everyone here thinks of me. /sarcasm

I've made a lot of money lately and I want to splurge on something I would have a lot of fun messing around with.

I'd go

FX-55
A8N-SLI
2 6800 Ultras (SLI)
74gig Raptor and a couple fat IDE hard drives for storage
2GB of RAM
DVD burner
DVD ROM
CoolerMaster Stacker case or LianLI PCV2000
good tuner/capture card

spend the rest on something else, cause that is literally too much money to spend on just a PC.. you'd just be looking for ways to spend.. with that hardware listed you could freakin' anything you wanted.

As others have mentioned, $5000 is an absolute waste for a computer these days. For less than $2500, you can easily get your dual monitor setup ($1200 for the 2001FPs, leaving $1300 for other parts) and you will still have something that's plenty fast and fun to play around with.

My thoughts exactly. The TV need not be your PC monitor, it's just that once you go above about $2,000, you're looking at greatly diminishing returns in computer speed & capability per dollar spent. Actually, it happens under $2k, but a $2k rig is at least respectable while a $7k rig is an utter waste. If you're Bill Gates or something, feel free to follow the above uberrig suggestions, but if not I'd spend ~$2k on the rig and do something else with the rest. A nice display is one option, but something entirely unrelated to the PC could be a fine idea as well.

Only thing I'd change is getting the DFI SLI baord when it comes out and get a 30" Apple Cinema with the rest. But IMO 5-7k is way to much to spend on a computer.

Try a Falcon Northwest. For 5000 bucks you can get a mean rig...but frankly, I think that's too much money to spend on a computer. AS far as price/performance ratios, once you go beyond about 2,500 bucks, you see rapidly diminishing returns.
