Got a couple of pc's in exchange for some repair

I did some pc work for a friend & in exchange he gave me an older Presario laptop (was non-working at the time, but I fixed that...now it's working) & an older Presario desktop (mini-tower, actually).

It's had the memory upgraded to 640 MB. After booting it up, it doesn't appear to have ever had any additional software installed on it...of course it came with a BUNCH! I also don't believe it's ever been connected to the internet because when I clicked on IE, I got the "Let's set up the internet" page. Same w/MediaPlayer.

It's had a 256mb memory upgrade giving it 384mb.
Like I said, when I got the laptop, it wasn't working at all. The power light came on & the light to show it's plugged into AC power came on, but no display, hard drive activity, or cd-rom activity. I opened it up & reseated the cpu & put it back together. Crossed my fingers, pushed the power button & it fired up. The only thing was I got the "no operating system" message. Since it had a Windows XP Home product id sticker on it, I installed that on there, although I was tempted to use Ubuntu. The battery's shot, i'm pretty sure, but everything else seems to be working fine.
I think i'll keep the laptop since I don't have one, but I was wondering about the desktop. Would I be better off selling it locally for use as a 2nd machine or part it out? Which would bring in the most money?
 
I have a laptop like that under a table leg helping to level the table back out.

The old desktops I find like that we use on our outdoor shooting range.

I was helping a friend out. I didn't want anything from him, but he asked if I would take the pc & laptop. I figured I could clean them up & resell them...not on here, of course...unless there's more people like MisterJackson who have defective furniture & can't afford paper targets. 😉
 
Donate the system(s) to Goodwill for tax deductions?
I'd personally keep the laptop, install Win2000 or XP on it, then keep it around.
 
I find older laptops are great spare machines. Just one cord to plug in and you're good to go. Had one set up at my parent's house for awhile as the email machine.
 
I agree about keeping the laptop around. I've been wanting one, but didn't have the funds. It's nothing special, I agree, but it'll do some things.
You think if I didn't donate desktop, I could part it out & make anything off of it by selling it on eBay (no insertion fees through September)? 2x256MB PC100 (PNY), 1x128MB PC100 (Infenion), T-Bird 1100, 60GB HDD (7200 rpm), 10/100 NIC is about the only thing I see of value.

I would steal the DVD Drive out of it for use with another machine. Then I would wait for the next smoking deal on some large HDD (like 300GB+) and set up a software RAID array under Xubuntu. Get samba running and you have instant NAS. Set up Webmin and Torrentflux while youre at it. Plug that sucker in somewhere out of the way and forget about it.
