Ok so here is what happened. I had a 1and1 free 3 year hosting deal. And I figured why not spend the six bucks and get a domain to go with it. So I got the domain and totally forgot about it. In the meantime I cancelled the debit card I used for the site cause I lost the card. Well I go to their about a year ago and see that I have my account locked. Probably cause they tried getting another $6 for my domain and saw that the card was closed. So I was like whatever, forgot about it.

So now I get this bill from Alexander & hamilton for $24.83? WTF? I never recieved the service that I am being charged for and now they want another god damn $18 for a service charge? I never agreed to that. So should I just pay it and forget about it or is their anything else I can do? Has this already effected my credit?

That's not guaranteed. Odds are good, but it really depends on the company. Some will make idle threats and send letters but not ever do anything.

Not always the case. It depends from agency to agency and how long the payment has been considered outstanding.

I thought that they had to make some semblance of an attempt to contact you before they send it to collections?

I had a collections against me for $1.35. I paid the bill for when my son was born and a few months later got a bill for $1.35. I called and wanted to know what it was for and nobody could tell me. so i didnt pay it.

a dumbass from the collections company they use and was all huffy and puffy with me, so i asked him how much do i owe them. he said let me look. ummm $1.35.

insert long pause on my end so he could grasp this.

i told him that the hospital couldnt justify the charge and im not paying it. he said ok, it will go against your credit rating. i just laughed and said go ahead.

yes it did show up on my credit rating, the only negative thing on there. but hey who cares the bank didnt when i refied my house.

I would pay it and let it go at that or it WILL affect your credit further.

It doesn't sound like you officially ever cancelled the service so by right
you owe them the money.

Hey i have 1and1 and i got an email from them saying that my domain payment was due at a certain date and it would be automatically taken out of my credit card etc etc.

So they did warn me ahead of time.

Does the collection amount show up on the credit report or just an "unpaid collection" listing?

I'm pretty sure the amount is included on the CR, and I bet the refinance bank found the $1.35 quite humorous.

Is this your first letter from them? Does it explain how you have 30 days to protest the validity of the collection as the law requires?
Still, you did sign up for 3 years and then only pay for 1... so the collection attempt sounds valid. If you pay in full before the 30 day period, the collection attempt may never be reported on your credit. Calling the collector would be a good idea.

Mortgage lenders typically ignore collections if the grand total is < $250 except that FHA/VA will care if it's within the last 12 months. A collection for $1.35 is bound to be laughable though.
edit: and penny amounts are not included on credit bureaus -- balances are rounded to the nearest dollar. So it would show a collection attempt for $1 buck. That would be funny.

What are you talking about signing up for 3 years? 1and1 is free for 3 years but the domain name is for one year and then you get charged again every year.

I paid the first year then the second year then pull out my domain from them and moved it over to namecheap

Edit: so really he should owe them 6 dollars.

$6 past due + $18 collection fee = $24
