Got a 6800gt and getting horrible fps and spike

i dont know if this is the right place to put this in, but the video section seemed off for it.
i just put together a new comp with amd 64 3800+x2, asus a8n SLi, 1 gig corsair, and asus en-geforce6800GT. i was playing CS 1.6 and i know i should be getting over 60fps but i think nvidia drivers capped it. i tried overriding the refresh rates and everything and yeah it would make me get really high ping or i wouldnt be able to connect to servers at all. i put back in the original drivers and i gave up and kept 60fps, but after like a hour of playing i'd start getting this random spikes..but it wasnt my connection cause i'd have a constant 5-20ms and never was there a lag spike. if anyone can help me i'd appreciate it if you can tell if you know how to take the cap off and whats causing the spikes..thank you

happened to me also.

1) i just disabled v-sync in nvidia setting and fps went back to 99.
2) maybe it's the CS thing. I couldn't find th answer for my spike either.. changed NIC and it went fine. (intel chip NIC was culprit for me)

hmmm..i'm using the onboard NIC...but it seems i have 2 connections...one is the regular net adapter..and the other is the NVIDIA nforce Networking Controller..i shut off the regular net adapter..you think i should turn it back on?...thanks for the help

The problem isn't your video card, it's the rates you use in counter-strike.

One thing that can be done to improve the FPS is turn of vertical-sync, this will allow you to hit the 100 fps mark.

For CS rates, open up the console "~" and type these in;

rate 25000
cl_rate 25000
cl_updaterate 101
cl_cmdrate 101
fps_max 101

After that you should be fine.

yeah i got v-sync off and my fps is 100..and i've had my rates perfect cause i get no choke or loss and a nice constant low ping..its just randomly when i'm moving..its stutters and then moves again..i dont know if its my CS or the fact that power strip is connected to an extention cord..

Powerstrip wouldn't effect it at all, though could be a fire/electrical issue depending on the environment...

VSYNC just keeps your graphics card from rendering partial-frames. So... the most you can actually lose in visual framerate is less than one frame. IMHO, just leave it on unless it causes a game crash (like it does for me in SS2)

rate 25000 only good for network play set to around 12k for broadband 4k for dialup
cl_rate 25000 same as above (one is upload rate, one is down)
cl_updaterate 101 times per secound server communicates with your comp, set as high as you can without choke (check net_graph 1)
cl_cmdrate 101 times per second your comp communicates with the server, set halfway between your updaterate and avgerage fps
fps_max 101 max allowed fps. THIS is probally what capped the framerate.

its weird..i have my netgraph on all the time..and i dont see a spike in my ms or choke or loss..i have my rates set the way you guys said for a really long time..the frame stutter is weird..

i think enabling the mat_forcedlighting (i think thats what its called) may help with the frame stutter.

Usually, vsync FIXES the frame stutter, though...

hopefully thats works..thanks..if that doesnt work i might just reinstall my CS because i had my cstrike folder on my original comp..and i copied it over..i dont know if that has anything to do with it but i hope that will help..thanks a lot

well i fixed it...apparently HL1 cant handle the dual core i have, thats causing causing the stutter and natural speed hacks..i needed to change it to single core for HL1 manually..thanks you all for your help though
