Hi

well I ordered a raptor and a 200WD on Tuesday, got them today, however they were packed pretty bad, double stacked and with one single layer of bubble wrap around them 🙁
in addition one side of the wrapping got squished and the hard drives were touching the side of the box with their bare casings when I opened the box 🙁
I am a paranoid person when it comes to hard drives and this definetly put a shadow on my day

so I was wondering if there is a way to stress test the hard drives before I can trust them
or should I consider RMA ?

please adivse

Thank you
Dan

P.S. I installed them and they work, no weird noises or anything, but Im still having problems trusting them

check out www.winstress.com although it's $100....try your hdd manufacturer's website, maybe they have a program.

A cheap way to stress test is to install base os and some game that can run a demo all night, like quake 3....if its still running in the morning, it is good (but it may fail due to something else in your system...)

Wow...even if they do work fine that is a bummer. The only complaint I've ever had about Newegg's shipping is how they don't rebox their cases. Not really that big of a deal since most of the better cases are already fairly well packed, but I still like that little extra security if it was in another box full of peanuts (like Monarch shipped in the past, not sure if they still do it that way). Good luck!

Since you would have to pay for return shipping. Then your new drives would probably come back the same. That's how they ship drives wrapped in bubblewrap surrounded by peanuts.

You wouldn't necessarily have to pay the return shipping. I've returned a couple of things to Newegg over the years and they have reimbursed me for shipping every time except for one. If you do RMA them it can't hurt to ask the rep if they'll reimburse you for shipping...especially since it sounds like they were poorly wrapped in the first place.

Viper is right though...every OEM drive I have received from them has been wrapped in big bubble wrapped and stuffed in a box of peanuts. I can say that all of my stuff has always been well wrapped and never (knock on wood) arrived in that condition.

Budman - Thanks, I ran it and it shows no errors

Dogma420 - Thanks, I'll try the game

Viper96720 - we are looking at this from 2 different angles, Im not worried about them dieing after the warranty expires, Im worried about my data

tomstevens26 - Thanks man ! appreciate it

well guys I'll burn them in durring this weekend, any type of crazy thing I can think of and I'll let ya know how it went

P.S. Id like to say that so far I do like the drives, the raptor is very quiet (I was affraid that it might be noisy considering the 10k rpm) and its quite fast, I didnt find it flying but feels faster than my older one (I had a maxtor 120gb 8mb 7200)

I know but isn't that why you should always back up. Then no need to worry about data.

yeah backing up a 200gb aint funny
plus I dont feel like buying one more hdd to backup one that was supposed to be just fine

You don't back up everything. Just the important stuff like work or school related. Not the pron. A DVD can hold a lot on a disc.

I doubt there's any problem...they might not be Raptors, Atlases or Cheatahs, but even the plain ATA drives are pretty tough.

Run chkdsk /r on each (or thorough scandisk in Win9x), then, I usually recommend AIDA32. Download and install it; go to the Storage section in it then, and click on SMART. This shows the readout of the drive's internal diagnostics. See if anything's failing there.

thing is I feel bad if I loose anything, even if its just an mp3

checked - all good

Hard drives can take a pretty impressive beating without being damaged, and they can also fail when they've had no physcical problems whatsoever. If they don't have any problems, then there's not much point in worrying about it.

damn that sucks... I think when I order my drives I will wait till one ships then order the other. just so they arn't smashing each other in the package =(

My dad works for WD and he says the drives can take ALOT of shock before damage. If they're not okay the SMART results will say so.
