Argh, they suck so hard. Both myself and my girlfriend have the same type of life, both are dependants who worked. Anyways, My dad did our taxes(he was once a CPA). Anyways, I get my tax return with no problems. She gets a letter saying her return was not correct, because she was claimed as a depedant and depandants do not get standard deductions. They let me go with the standard deduction, but didnt let her. ARGH, time to go fight the IRS.

sorry for the language mods🙂

<< You slipped by. If you are claimed as a dependent by someone else, you can't claim yourself as a dependent. >>

i didnt claim myself as a dependant. We both claimed standard deduction, which is $4550 for a single person. So, if you make $8000 a year, subtract $4550, you only have to pay taxes on the other $3450. For some reason hers got screwed up.

You should send a threatening letter to them explaining the situation and that you have 100lbs of dynamite placed in a random building somewhere in the US. Of course, don't actually do the dynamite thing, but it will definatly get a response from from the IRS 🙂

You can re-do the return where she was claimed as a dependent (removing her as a dependent from her parents return), then re-do her return and let her claim herself. She can then give her parents what they would have recieved from her refund. You just slipped by.

EDIT: As long as no one has cashed any checks 🙂you can void them or send them back with the updated returns.

You didn't claim yourself as a dependent but did your parents...? Is that the problem? I dunno (if I knew that I wouldn't be sitting here staring at a wall wondering what I'm doing). Anyway that sucks because IRS sure ain't likely to deal with it fast!

Speaking of the IRS, I sent in my federal and state taxes in mid march. I owed the state about $30, and was getting a refund of about $125 from the federal government.

Three days after I mailed them, the $30 was deducted from my account, but I STILL don't have my refund. We see where thier priorities are....

You didn't go direct deposit did you? They deposited my refund into my checking account less than 2 weeks after I filed.

<< Um, dependents DO get the standard deduction. They just don't get the personal exemption. >>

exactly. For some reason, they decided not to let her have any. She only my 4 grand last year, and should have(theoretically) gotten it all back, since she did not make enough to be taxed on

GASP! You hate the IRS?

I thought everyone loved them... I love my employer taking taxes out of my paycheck, and then at the end of the year, having the IRS taking more out of it....!
