I imagine when radio was in its widespread glory that you could find an article by some geezer talking about how all kids do these days is sit by the idiot box and listen to radio shows so they could use a decoder ring to get an ovaltine coupon. Don't forget comic books were portrayed as the likely destruction of all society, family and morality. And even growing up I remember scolds about the dangers of too much tv, how it will make you blind, fat, and dumb and I imagine those arguments started decades before I was born. And of course today video games are the favorite culprit for any and every legal infraction committed by persons under 25, nevermind that the average gamer is older than that.

Now we have the ultimate evil, cell phones! That's right, texting will render your otherwise socially adept child blind to the everyday expressions and nuances of human behavior. Worse, children who text while young may never develop crucial social skills like, um, talking and playing with other children, because texting will consume their entire life.

When the fuck are old fogies going to shut the hell up about "the kids" or new technology, about how the world's going to hell, about how kids are doomed, about how things used to be great before X? There were no golden years outside of their personal perspective. We had serial killers in the 20s and the 30s and the 40s and the 50s. Must've been the commies' fault back then.

 Haha, nice Christmas Story reference!

Texting is producing people with zero communication and social skills. I see this more and more from young people entering the work force. They are totally unable to communicate. I'm pretty sure there have even been studies that prove this.

Damn kids these days, when I was growing up we didn't have these god damn biological neural implants, we had keyboards AND WE LIKED IT! And these things called "mice", not this wetware neural net crap you young bucks have today, we had to WORK to make that mouse move on the screen!

Why would you blame a cell phone over the idiot? That same idiot probably drinks at house partie's every other night since hitting highschool.

When you're young you don't know sh*t because you've been living with your tired, out of the loop parents for the past twenty years.

It has nothing to do with a damn cell phone. What, are we speaking a different language when we txt or talk on the phone?????

This article is just some dumbass making another excuse for his learning disabled child.

You don't spend the first quarter of your life in school for the interaction.

They also walk into streetlight poles.

Walking around a college campus is like trying to dodge slow moving cows on a highway. All these stupid people with their heads buried in their phones not watching where they walking and/or walking slowly... although the best is when the person in front of you just stops walking completely. I've 'accidentally' run into them a few times, jackasses.

Actually I think interraction is a strong component to why you spend the first quarter of your life in school, and also why home schooled kids are weird. Also covered by South Park I believe.

Kids today are more stupid.

Go and read high school essays from the 1940s and 1950s. Few college seniors could write that well.

I especially love people who rant about this topic with error-laden posts.

If it's a chick they get all bothered too like 'How DARE you walk into me when I stop unexpectedly in cramped walkways when people are trying to get to class - pervert' - Then you get all angry and say "well you watch where you're going".

If it's a hot chick they get all bothered and somehow you end up saying sorry.

I especially love people who rely on their personal opinion that essays authored 60 years ago are superior to essays written today as evidence that kids are stupid. Makes you sound old. Given email and texting I have little doubt kids communicate in written words far more often today than they did 60 years ago. This lends a certain informality to written communication which was likely not present 60 years ago, when writing was a task reserved almost exclusively for academic arenas.

There were people like you 50 years ago who thought kids in the 50s were retards compared to kids from the 20s. And people in the 20s thought no child born in the 20th century could measure up to the good old days of the 19th century. Sorry, the kids aren't getting any dumber, and they certainly aren't getting any dumber due to comic books, radio, tv, movies, video games or cell phones.

the other day my father got pretty upset when he learned that my brother might have posted his picture online. because apparently identity thieves can get all his information with it and if he wanted to post his picture he would have called the newspaper instead.

everyone knows this.

My mother was a child of the 1940s and 50s. She could read and write well. But she can't figure out how to turn on the television, turn on the receiver, set the receiver to the proper input, turn on the cable box, and navigate through the menu to find the appropriate channel to watch the football game. My nephew can't write very well, but he can do this. He also built his own computer (with my assistance, admittedly). Most baby boomers don't do that.

Just because our children's brains are focused on different things does not inherently mean that they are less developed than the brains of children in the past.

Clearly, writing as well as Shakespeare will make one successful in their career and in life

My kids will not be doing any of this stuff. Texting is retarded and so are 'social networking' sites. I never got into any of that in high school or college because I was busy doing things that actually mattered. They will be as well. It annoys me when people say "that's just how he/she is" in reference to a kid's behavior. They are their own people, sure, but the point of being a parent is to guide them and help them make better decisions. Being stupid enough to walk into a manhole or street light is a failure of parenting imo.

I love how the same old fogey who says kids are getting dumber because of all this new technology can't figure out how to use a computer even if he is shown 1000 times in a row...but some 4 year old can do it often without even being shown.

It's all relative. People aren't getting "stupid"...their skillset is only changing.

I hope to live to see the day when the Telekinetic Phone is invented. Imagine the Ranting over lazy ass kids lying on the Couch Thinking all day!! That's gotta have Epic Rant potential!!

Americans today DONT communicate as well as folks from ye olden days. They communicate more frequently, and over more mediums, but they dont communicate as well.
Communication is the exchange of ideas, and thats a dying art.

Also, I agree with MrDudeMan. "Thats just how it is" is never an acceptable excuse for anything. And newer does not always mean better. Just because people are communicating in a new way does not mean they are communicating better.

I don't know that texting will be the downfall of society, but I could see it being potentially detrimental to the average student's writing ability and control of language.

Not that the average person really cares about writing well to begin with, or that this has changed at all in the past century, though.
