Is there a Grade of Service (GoS) associated with ADSL?

my second question is that if a contention ratio of 5:1 is provided for say 512 kbps UL and 512 kbps DL, that would mean that the 512 kbps pipe is shared amongst 5 users. can the service provider provide a 6th user access to the pipe or is it set (hard coded) to 5 users or is it just a moral limitation that the provider is setting himself and he can actually accommodate x number of users

Probably better questions for the Networking forum (as they are not really "highly technical" questions).

These are both up to the service provider. I do not believe the DSL spec itself includes any provision for service levels, but the provider can do things upstream to manage them. How many people share what amount of bandwidth is also up to the service provider.

Generally, yes. Technically speaking, the service provider can do whatever they want with the packets coming in.

However, DSL is *usually* a dedicated link at the individual home level (you may be sharing bandwidth upstream, but your 512Kbps or whatever should be dedicated just to you). I'm not a telecom expert, though, so maybe it can be setup in a shared fasion.
