he is 32 or 36 or something in the first game, with a doctorate in Theoretical Physics from MIT.

This intro credits say so.

But he still kicks large amounts of ass. And by large I mean copius.
 
According to HL2, he was pretty fresh out of MIT when he went to Black Mesa. Not sure how long he worked there until the "incident". Now he's "the only freeman"
