Darby, as one who has spent a good portion of existense analyzing similar crazy schemes and having started a few in my days, let me comment on what you're trying to do.
First of all, you have the right idea. If you want to build a new world and a better community, it must be economically sound. The movements of the 60's failed to a large extent because people just wanted sex, love, and pot and living together. They ignored real problems of how to survive and fundamental issues of subsistence strategy. You hit on it pretty quickly, kudos.
Second, if you start a plan like this, you need alot of dumb luck, intellect, and ignorance since no sane person would join. That being said, where do I sign up?
Third, you need to have a better plan. This is doable. But you must consider geographic restrictions and existing routes of commerce. If you want to do software, you are a little late as Silicon valley pretty much beat you in the history of things. So, your locations would be restricted. If you want to start some other sort of venture in another area, then you will have to do long-term strategic planning to make sure you don't make mistakes early on. In other words, the ida is great and may work but I see no plan here. You need a plan and security or at least the appearance of security to attract people, no matter how crazy they are...
Fourth, make sure you think this through and that this isn't some teenagerish wishful thinking. Lots of college people want to go out and save the world and all that sorts of stuff and their idealistic stuff sure inspires but at the end of the day, there better be money in the bank. That is, if you're organizing, make sure you know what you're doing. Gnosce te ipsum (know yourself).
Fifth, you need good mentorship if you want something like this to last. And good contacts.
Sixth, evaluate your product beforehand and do the analysis to make sure you can turn a profit. Not only do you need a plan, you also need to do your research.
If you're actually serious about doing something like this, then you may actually be on to something, if you are willing to work to get to it, that it. It's an insane work load, I'll tell you that. Your life will essentially be the project. This is not necessarily bad if it works but devastating (yet valuable) if it doesn't.
But hey, we only live once, right? Unless the Hindus are right...
Cheers !
