- Republican Dino Rossi came out ahead of Democrat Christine Gregoire by just 42 votes Wednesday in the recount for Washington governor, but the Democrats are expected to demand yet another recount.

I'm always surprised that there really are errors in ballot counting, but I guess it's understandable.

I think in this case, given the extreme closeness of the race, a further recount isn't entirely irresponsible.

ugh, these are bad I dont care who wins fair and square but this is obvious proof there are serious flaws.
Next time lets be for sure. This division of the country would be no where as near as bad if we all were for sure about how our votes count.

The country division would be just as bad, because, even if all the votes were counted, a loser (or supporters) would find something to complain about. Preventing voters from voting, polling places being inaccessible, voter intimidation, etc.

Polarization of the political spectrum has gotten so bad that a central ground is not considered to be acceptible.

Wonder where democrats will find another box of votes.

A hand recount will be in order...

Looking at the returns, looks like that won't matter.

The same thing that happened to the major cities in the U.S. happened in Oregon. Only the County with the main city in Oregon, King County and the largest population carried the Democrat.

The rest of the rural Religious State carried the Republican. Even "Liberal" Oregon lost out to the Radical Right Religious vote.

ooooh, another "stolen election" brought to you by RNC, Folgers coffee, United Airlines and Wendy's - where you can have it YOUR way. 😉

I wouldn't exactly call Pierce county a rural religious county. Spokane county isn't exactly sparsely populated either. Granted it is a little more "rural" than some of the coastal counties, it's not exactly like Okanogan. But I guess since the liberal candidate isn't in the lead, there's gotta be something for you to bitch about.

Rossi won because he ran a good campaign. He didn't talk about god or try too hard to get the religous vote because he already had it. Intead he ran on a platform of making Washington better for businesses and changing the course after 20 years of Democratic leadership. This convinced a lot of Democrats to jump the fence, along with Gregoire's stale campaign.

Rossi should call Bush and get advice about how to spend all the political capital earned from this mandate.

Interesting that the democrats keep finding new votes If it's Not Close...
During this hand recount the King County Canvassing Board is "interpreting" the ballots, usually along party lines (two Democrats, one Republican). Pencil marks next to a candidate's name are counted as a voter intent, a ballot that was voted straight for one party but without a vote for governor is interpreted as showing intent to vote for that party's gubenatorial candidate (Washington State has a strong tradition of crossing party lines, but the Canvassing Board went this way by a vote of...guess what, 2-1 along party lines). In another case someone wrote in Christine Rossi (the Democratic candidate is Christine Gregoire, the Republican candidate is Dino Rossi). The Canvassing Board voted (2-1) that the voter's intent was the Democrat, Christine Gregoire.

A judge threw out the new votes yesterday. I can see appeals up to the Supreme court on this one.

The Sound of Stealing
Something similar has been going on in Washington State. The Republican candidate for Governor, Dino Rossi, held a lead of a few thousand votes near the end of the counting of the state?s almost two million absentee ballots (70% of Washington?s votes are cast this way). Then, in heavily Democratic King County, officials ?discovered? 10,000 additional absentee ballots they had not originally included in the number remaining to be counted. In addition, a Judge ordered the County to allow Democratic Party officials to obtain the names and addresses of 929 people whose ballots were classified as provisional because of mismatched or missing signatures, so as to facilitate the inclusion of these votes. This resulted in a rather unorthodox invasion of privacy: Democratic officials contacted these 929 individuals to ask whom they had voted for in the Governor?s race. If they answered Gregoire, they were then shuttled to the county office to clear up their signature problem. This vote-mining technique added a net 400 votes for Gregoire. The 10,000 extra King County ballots added another 2,000 net votes for Gregoire. As a result of this final Gregoire surge from King County, Rossi?s lead was cut to a scant 261 votes, of about 2.9 million cast.

Then the state began a required mandatory machine recount statewide. But King County officials decided to also hand recount 700 previously ?uncounted? ballots for Governor. These ballots were uncounted only in the sense that they had been put through the machine, and the machine had not detected any vote for Governor on them. In Florida terminology from the 2000 race, these were ?undervotes?. The County officials went hunting for chads and found enough to net Gregoire an additional 245 votes. When added to small changes in the machine recount in other counties, Rossi?s lead slipped to just 42 votes. John Fund, the author of a new book, Stealing Elections: How Vote Fraud Threatens Our Democracy, wrote a column with a play-by-play on the Washington Governor?s race that carried the story up to the conclusion of the first recount.

The state Democratic Party then paid for a statewide hand recount of the ballots that had already been machine counted twice. The machinations of this hand recount are described every day in the brilliant group blog SoundPolitics.com. As Rossi?s statewide lead crept up to over a 120 votes as eastern Washington and more rural counties recounted their votes, desperate Democratic officials in King County reached back into their bag for one more cache of votes. This time they discovered 573 uncounted absentee votes with missing or inconsistent signatures. They found another 22 hidden near some box in an office. (As Dave Barry would say, I am not making this up).

We'll find out soon whether the democrats have found enough votes to put their candidate in the governor's chair.

Can't wait to hear how many votes they find in the local cemetaries in the 5th recount.

Looks like the Democrats will not be looking for new votes anymore. They finally got the result they wanted Dems Claim Win in Wash. Governor's Race

The crowd chanted "No more fraud!" They held signs saying "Welcome to Ukraine" and wore orange, a tribute to the signature color of demonstrators in Ukraine who protested a fraud-marred election there.
