GoPro battery dies in 2 mins. After OVERNIGHT charge?

GoPro HERO only comes with a USB charger (seriously?)
So, I plug it into USB ....OVERNIGHT.

Today, the thing dies within literally 3 mins of use.

I can’t possibly comprehend that overnight is not even close to long enough.
Do you need to charge the GoPro for several days?
My cell phone charges to 100% within an hour or two.
 
If you remove and replace the battery, does anything change? A Samsung camera that we have had for a while does that every once in a while.

Are you sure it was actually charging the who time?
Does it have a battery percentage indicator?
Is it new? If so, and the battery showed fully charged when it came on, it might be defective.
 
How do you remove the battery?
It is encased in some plastic shield.
I can lift the back gate, but it's still stuck inside the casing.
The buttons are mounted INTO the clear case, so I have no idea how you'd ever remove it.

Man, this is got to be the WORST user interface decision I have ever seen.
When plugged in, but it is NOT charging (b/c camera power is on), the LCD shows a charging battery icon.
When the LCD is blank and there’s a red light, that means its charging.
Yes, that’s correct, when the LCD shows a charging battery icon, that means it is NOT charging.

Camera is now off, and red light is on. Thanks.

It's obvious you got this thing used if you didn't know about the clear shell.

Sounds like you might have solved it already, but if it is a GoPro Hero (not a 2, 3, or 4), then the battery is likely a couple years old. Depending on how well it was used, it may not be holding a charge anymore -- rechargeables seem to like doing that.

My GoPro Hero 2 used to charge after a couple hours from maybe 1/4 battery from my laptop -- pretty sure laptop was limited to 0.5 amps.

I have no idea what this statement means.
They all have a clear shell.
Of course I know it has a clear shell, just by LOOKING at it.
What can that possibly have to do with me buying it used?

It sounded like you bought the original GoPro Hero that came out around 2010, not the recently released Hero -- no idea why they chose such a similar name. That would have explained the dead battery.

As far as I knew, all GoPros were removable from their clear cases, same with batteries. The new one, apparently, is mounted into the clear case and not removable.

I thought you bought it used and didn't have a manual to look at, or ever had to opportunity to mount the camera into the case. Looks like I was wrong and GoPro changed the design.
 
So we really have to know the product before buying it. Go Pro develops a lot over the years and lots of things changed. Original products won't just drain especially when its brand new when you first bought it. Glad you've got it already. Maybe you just need to read the manual.
 
No one is going to call him out on the fact that you can't plug it in without also removing it from the waterproof housing?

Edit: I see they moved the charge port on this model.

FWIW the Hero 4 charges just fine when its turned on.

Had to revisit this thread to refresh on how to deal with this shit-for-brains interface on the GoPro.
Yea, that's right, the incremental charging battery icon means IT'S NOT CHARGING. Red light means charging.
I need to type it again to beliebe it.
 
Ok this is confusing. Can you record while it is charging? Like can you charge it with an ext phone bat pack while it is recording?
