Oh man, what a great thread for me to link in.

This local-ish issue is essentially this link in action...at the local level.

I'm telling ya, this would be a good way to link how people vote with actual consequences for the way people vote.

I don't think he meant that school boards were/are not made up of partisan people, if I read him correctly he meant that they are not voted on in partisan format. So that when you vote for your local school board it will not put the (R) or (D) next to their name. The only way to know what party or ideology they espouse is to pay attention to their platform.

Not many people do, so they end up voting for someone nearly at random. That often means that the more extremists tend to win because they vote with intention. If you have a thousand people that randomly vote for either candidate, and then 100 that all vote for one person, that one person mostly wins.

No I get that and that is exactly what I was talking about. For such positions it used to be boiler plate politics and it was like there was a societal agreement about keeping it that way because ultimately everyone actually agreed that providing children with a solid education is an objective good, but right wingers have gone absolutely insane and extreme.

At least here in the south there has always been a fight between those that want good education for our kids, and those that want ideological or religious education for the kids. Every year we have to fight to keep text books in that stick to the accepted science instead of telling kids that the Dinosaurs didn't get on Noah's Arc and that is why they went extinct 5000 years go. That is not a joke, it was front runner for proposed science text books in Texas a few years ago.

Sounds good at first until you realize Democrats are liberals on the right of the political spectrum and you're asking them to swing way left to be social democrats or socialists with nationalized healthcare, guaranteed living wages, and such. Democrats love being able to not pass progressive legislation and then blame the GOP for it so good luck ever getting them to embrace this idea.

EDIT: Crap, sorry didn't realize this was an old thread. Showed up in my recommendations here when posting in another thread.

You are right! If anything..

Dems are the real "conservatives".

They don't want change.. they want the status quo with one proviso!

What they definitely don't want is their own voters dying in mass numbers.. so they're pro-healthcare, pro-cheap meds, pro-safety net.

But all that hugely liberal stuff, 100 yards left of AOC.. or all the bullshit thrown around by Fox News about how crazy the "left" is.. that shit never even gets a vote, much less becomes an actual platform.

So you're right.. dems are the conservatives. Republicans are the bomb throwers on the status quo but they sure do a good job convincing people like @pcgeek11 , @blackangst1 , @brandonbull that they're the real conservatives and out to protect their interests.

And Republican parent who voted for those school board members I could give two shits about any of their aggravations anymore. Any parent who didn't vote for them I really feel bad. Disgusting what Republicans do to society. It almost all phases of living. From education to healthcare to housing to pollution to really the whole list

It’s a new school year since this thread was created, anyone know what came of it?

I wouldn't confuse liberal with left just because Fox News obfuscates language like that. A nationalized healthcare like Bernie Sanders argues for is not liberal since it's not a market solution like the ACA, which is a liberal answer to healthcare.

Good reminder for folks to research their local elections and get out to vote in 2 weeks if you have off-cycle local elections. Insane MAGA slates are running again in most red and purple districts, and even some quite blue districts including mine (Biden+9 district).

In notionally non-partisan election with no party listed, 2 MAGA candidates got elected to school board last election, and 4 more running this election on an "anti-woke" slate as their primary advertising basis to run. Book bans and destruction of public education will be thrown in free of charge, of course.

How about we give Democrats 4 years of full control without being subject to filibuster before we accuse them of not wanting to pass progressive legislation?

LOL believing you know how almost 300 individual people will act in a situation they've never been in before, including many people you have probably never heard of.
I'll believe they can be a decent party when the dinosaurs who cut their teeth trying to appeal to Reagan voters and who have a stranglehold on the party all die off. Feinstein kicking was a good start. Until then the Democrats are mostly neoliberal trash. Better than the GOP across the board, but still awful.

Any holdouts on things like M4A could be bought off with a relatively tiny amount of pork thrown their district's/state's way. Shit would get DONE. If Democrats went 4 years without fixing most of this shit the guillotines would be out for every one of them because there are no more options.

Like 15% of the senate supports Medicare For All. That's a pipe dream out of the current Democrat party.
