GOP set to ban *all* embryonic stem cell research?

Much like immunity for the Telcom's, there is no way this will pass with a Democrat majority in Congress.
 
Red meat for the evangelicals for the upcoming voting season. No way this would pass even under the best of scenarios which the Repubs don't have anyway.

This political war is getting hilarious and obvious. Both sides do it, but the only reason they are pushing this type of legislation right now is so they can stir up people and hopefully get more votes for John McCain in November.

Funny thing is, with all the breakthroughs in the last 2 years with adult and non-embryonic cell research, embryonic stem cell research is hardly even noteworthy by the most liberal supporters.
 
Read the link, this not legislation in any manner, shape, or form. This is the GOP platform the GOP may or may not in future ignore, but if the GOP does not win the Presidential elections in 08, , it ain't worth the paper its printed on.

Its also customary for the outgoing President to make a exciting pile of proclamations about national policy, and they often last a day or two until the new President gets around to deleting them.
 
Good. I for one am glad to hear this and I hope the (D)'s push this issue to the front. It's a perfect example of how the 'holier than thou' (R) party is holding back scientific research in the name of their faith. I swear some of these idiots care more about cells in a test tube than people suffering with disease.

Adult Stem Cells v. Embryonic Stem Cells
From everything I've read so far...adult stem cell research has actually been far more successful in providing cures for serious illnesses. Also, I understand that there have been some horrific failures with embryonic stem cell research where the stem cells form into tumors.
 
Didn't read the article since it wasn't posted, but seriously doubt it would pass as described by the OP.

The government's job is to regulate research based on ethical guidelines. The absence of ethics in research is a very scary path indeed. Whether or not you agree with embryonic stem cell research, the lack of acknowledgement of the imporance of ethical considerations in research by those in this forum is appalling. There's a reason each university and hospital has an ethics committee that is supposed to approve any research, including that on post mortem animal tissue. Poisoning the well, e.g.

I have heard about this as well. Which makes embryonic stem cell research that less meaningful in the public eye. It simply fails to deliver.
 
Lousy idea.

The first one was good with the "and" that allowed research on cells, but did not allow for the creation of embryos to get those cells.

The idea of creating embryos just to destroy them is pretty barbaric.
 
Let's remember that this is just the party platform and will never be spoken of again after the convention.

The Democratic platform includes stuff that they would rather not have talked about either
The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay, and we oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right.
