This isn't about Russian meddling in 2016 either.

Which, this just shows that small time shit like this will get you, but blatantly doing the exact same type of shit has basically no consequences for all the other Republicans that partook (how many got money from the NRA that was being used to funnel Russian money into Republican campaigns?).

I actually think his mistake seems to be he sought advice from Trey Gowdy (Clown Captain of the Republican Benghazi Circus).

Curious about the "why" of it. What would this foreign national be attempting to accomplish by giving donations that the defendant was allegedly unaware of?

Well, having spent a bit of time living there, I'll let you in on something... Nebraska is kinda stupid. Not like Mississippi stupid, but kinda stupid.

But of course, the most dishonest person in the history of politics has a problem with lying being a crime in any context. What a surprise.

If every public lie was a crime punishable by just 10 days jail time, Trump would be facing 300,000 days in the can.

Translation: isn't it terrible that Republicans aren't above the law?

Yaknow, if you take a step back, it's actually kinda (tragically) humorous that the entirety of Trumpism, and thus the GOP, is like a little kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar complaining he shouldn't get in trouble because he can claim he saw some other kids do it too.
Someone needs to explain to Trump and his MAGAs that adults (and the law) don't work that way.

Not long after Toufic Baaklini settled a case with the Justice Department involving illegal campaign donations to members of Congress, a Republican lawmaker took more contributions from him.

An associate of the Nigerian-born billionaire at the heart of a scandal threatening to bring down Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.), Baaklini agreed to pay $90,000 and cooperate with investigators in a case the DOJ settled in March 2021. This year, he made two separate $1,000 contributions to Rep. Scott Perry’s campaign — one on the same day the agreement became public, according to federal records. :)
