Sorry that I agreed to get paid $X for 40 hours a week to work and that I don't want to work for free like a bunch of idiots do and think it's some badge of honor because they are working for free (or OT in some case - I'll take my free time over OT, as mentioned).

At my first job, they wanted us to work 20% overtime all the time with no extra pay. I actually got scolded for not doing it as I only averaged 44 hours per week over the year. I told 'em the truth, "I got all of my work done in the time necessary." Their response? "Go help someone else." Yeah, let's just ignore that the person then has to explain all that they're doing to me (taking away their time), and then I can finally do it (so I finish my extra hours just getting acclimated). This wasn't some podunk company either... this was at a rather large corporation.

Yeah I wouldn't have even started working at a place like that. One of the first questions i ask when job hunting in the "do you have any questions for us?" part is if the normal work hour is 40 hours. As soon as I hear anything more than that, or that more than 40 hour weeks can be common, I'm out.

My employer ditched shift differentials and weekend 1.5x in 2011, which means we get to work weekend shifts including 2nd and 3rd for straight time.

Edit: I fully expect my employer to change their vacation policy to make this new ruling work in their favor.

I'm really not seeing how this could screw over employees in anything except the shittiest companies that already ignore labor laws. If you are going to hang your hat on the idea that employers won't follow the law, shouldn't that be a complaint with the current laws too?

We get an 8 hour holiday pay and 2x OT for all hours worked. Last year over the Thanksgiving week I worked 12 hours a day all week. I got 40 hours straight time, 24 hours at 1.5x, and 36 hours at 2x pay.

We get an 8 hour holiday pay and 2x OT for all hours worked. Last year over the Thanksgiving week I worked 12 hours a day all week. I got 40 hours straight time, 24 hours at 1.5x, and 36 hours at 2x pay.

That's nice. That is basically what a strong union could get you. Very similar to what the union guys at my old job got, except they also went to 2x after 12 hours and stayed there until they had at least an 8 hour break. So when I travelled with them we basically never stopped working, I only got straight time though.

I mentioned earlier my hospital already took our Holiday pay away and converted it to banked PTO instead. Some pushed back and jumped ship which is very easy to do in direct health care and the PTB didn't blink. They would jump at the chance to convert our paid 1.5x to PTO...

Why is everyone complaining, look at the brightside, as American wages continually fall and foreign wages rise eventually you will reach parity and all that stuff you buy at places like Walmart made under conditions and wages you refuse to work under can be made in the USA.

Then you could be the ones writing notes and placing them in handbags so some person in some foreign country can read about the awful conditions you had to endure in making that product.

A woman in Arizona said she made a stunning discovery inside a new purse she bought at a Walmart: a note apparently written by a desperate prisoner in China.

Doesn't change our pay either, we're on a government contract and have a union. We seem to get paid semi similar.

We get a $.65 increase between 2pm and 10pm, $1.05 increase from 10pm to 6am. Saturday and Sunday is $1.10 increase, if Sunday is your 7th day in a row, 2x pay. Each holiday is 8 hours of 2.5x pay. So working a Sat or Sun night is a healthy increase, especially on 2x or 2.5x pay. Working 7 days in a row sounds long, except when you consider the 24 hour clock starts at 10pm, so if you work say 6pm to 2am, that's two day in an 8 hour period. You have to have at least 4 hours in a day for it to count. Its easy to link 7 days if you want, for 2x pay. We also get paid 2 hours of OT a week to work out, and 45 mins a day we work OT to change clothes and meet before work starts. We don't even have to work the actual holiday to get paid 2.5x. If you're off, then the next day you work is 2.5x pay. We get 11 per year in total.

My last job already had it setup where you could bank the OT for time off, or take the pay. At any point you could get a payout of the time banked.

Yeah, I don't understand how this law makes it easier for employers to screw their employees. It seems to me like it is easier to coerce an employee to work overtime without recording the extra hours than it would be to accurately record their overtime, force them to take comp time instead of pay, refuse to allow them to use the comp time, and then fail to pay out the comp time after a year when it expires.

We get overtime 1.5X for all overtime, double time 2X on Sundays and shift differential pay $1.20 and hour for 2nd and 3rd shifts 7 days a week.

Federal law doesn't require them to give holidays or pay overtime just because it's a holiday. Your company is either complying with state law or paying above the minimum requirements to keep their employees happy. Either way, nothing in this law will change that.
