GOP losing party identification in almost every single major demographic subgroup

I think the average American is waking up to the fact that that the GOP only cares about a small sliver of the population and nobody else. It'll be kind of hard for the GOP to raise funds when everyone is jumping ship. George Bush really has been the Democrat's best asset (post presidency of course). Despite the enormous damage he's done for this country, i guess we should thank him that nobody's going to vote (R) for a very long time.

Also, i'm wondering if these losses count independants/democrats who vote (R) but don't register (R), if not, they're in even deeper trouble.

Originally I thought this was just a cyclical thing and it very well may still be, but the ass-whooping the republican party is taking seems unprecedented. And the thing is, they don't seem to be doing a thing to improve their situation any.

I vote for the Ron Paul Republicans and Democrats.

Both parties suck. The Democrats will realize that once they go unchallenged for a while like the Republicans just did..

Despite media hype over GOP malaise, the facts are the Dems are still stagnant as a party. Conservatives have been leaving GOP and becoming independent. Foolish people interpret this to mean conservatism is "dead" when its doing well (pro life ID is up, homosexual marriage lost in all states its was voted on, bewteen 60 and 70 percent of people want borders fixed, 80% want troops on borders and today Rassmussen reports over 80% of US people wasnt English as an official language). Bush was not a conservative despite all the Marxocrats wringing their hands over "the far right" that last 8 years. If the GOP actually gets back to it's conservatives and drops RINOs the future is very bright - especially with the Obama the maniac pushing the US over a cliff with a big toothy grin.

I'm about to change my party affiliation from Republican to Independent.
We need a party for fiscal conservatives, who are socially liberal (ie: pro choice, pro stem cell, pro gay marriage, etc.)

As long as they vote Democrat, which they do now, I don't really care if people identify themselves as Independent. What counts are votes, not party ID.

Except that if you read up on Pew's other research on the subject you will see that when they ask the Independent voters which party they lean towards, the majority of the Independents say that they lean Democratic. This has not changed despite the large outflux of people from the Republican party. If it were truly as you say, the conservatives becoming independents, this would not be the case. In reality, as everyone has been saying, the moderates are abandoning the GOP as it continues to radicalize.

Likely social liberal / fiscal conservatives that believe fiscal conservatism is more important right now than modern social liberalism. Unfortunately, the modern Republican party is not exactly fiscally conservative, but it has the perception of being so to some.

Oddly enough, one of the biggest Republican supporters that I know personally is a lesbian.

McCain ran from the far right to hold the fundie conservative base and that's what cost him the election. His flip-flops and pandering were sickening for a mavericky dude like Mac.

He lost a good many of his supporters from 2000 because of his transition.

You two are really acting like last election had a lot to do with ideology. There were two issues. The economy, and people sick of the GOP. It really didnt matter what the GOP ran last fall, they were going to lose. Hell I think if Obama switched parties and ran as a Republican he would have lost.

People wanted change, they got it. Now they can make a decision in the next two election cycles if they like it.

I think people are confusing the GOP's expansion of govt and social services with not being conservative enough. The GOP has imo become more conservative in the last 8 years on social issues while becoming more liberal on fiscal issues. IMO that is a bad combination. And people agree.

You must be young. In '84, Reagan beat Mondale in 49 states, for just under 98% of the electoral college (and something like an 18 point margin in the popular vote). THAT was an asswhoppin'. Obama only beat McCain by just under 8%. These things are cyclical. The GOP will be back - not because they're showing any particular brilliance at the moment (they're not), but because the Dems will become corrupted by their power (they're well on their way so far) and make themselves look worse. You can't run trillion dollar deficits forever, despite what Obama thinks.
