People think that the separation of state and church was to protect just the state. It was to protect the church as well from being used as a tool of the state, something that happened anyway (look at the last few elections).

I think the best way to explain this would be to use a metaphor. I find the scene at the end of Dumb and Dumber, where Lloyd (Jim Carrey's character) asks Mary what his chances with her are to be fitting.

Mary: Not good.
Lloyd: Not good, like one in a hundred?
Mary: More like one in a million.
Lloyd: So you're telling me there's a chance!

Now, Lloyd represents the average/below average person (really even plenty of above average as well), and the question is what are the chances of it creating a black hole and sucks the earth and everybody into it. Oh, and take that one in a million and replace it with some obscene number that they wouldn't even be able to comprehend. You still get the same response.
