whats the point of this? I've never heard about google wave, and watching that it looks like it was building some kind of presentation, but it just ended :/

It's more what can be done with it as an API than what it is as a chat program. There is some AMAZING potential here if you look at these two links and understand what is being done.

You don't need to be friends but if someone already on the wave can add another user to the wave.
