Google + Valve = ?

It's just a rumor, and one from Inquirer too. Let's wait and see what happens with time, hopefully no such thing will happen.

Funny thing, a lot of rumors from TheInq have this weird habit of actually coming true...

Yeah i remember the whole AMD+ATI thing people claimed would never happen. I would rather google buy valve than EA, google is a far superior company.

why would google want to buy valve? google doesnt need to add gaming to its portfolio. Google needs to stick with what it does best search and apps, gaming would be an unwise investment. Not that gaming is not a great industry, i highly doubt google would lose money on the deal, but still it would be a waste of their time and practically unlimited resources.

Supposedly Google recently bought some Korean social networking stuff as well as mentioned that they wanted to get into games distribution.

It's either a signal that the rumor might be true, or it serves as the impetus for it as a fabrication with pedigree.

Seems to me that Google has so many resources that it could just build a networking and file-sharing app-- but perhaps it is Steam's 10 million subscribers it's really after.

Another thing is it would be horrible for gamers. I for one own over 100 games, i know i have a problem a hate those damn weekend deals get me every time, on steam and i wouldnt want to be inundated with stupid ads and apps for download. Steam is a gaming platform that will and is being coppied by many for other reasons. Google should and most likely will continue to develop their own digital distribution system which will probably be amazing for what it is meant to do, distribute google apps, not games. Dont get me wrong i love google and think many of there services are second to none. Valve will remain independent and continue to reap the benefits of their labor of love that is steam.

Makes sense in Googles ever expanding attempt to be a competitor and "better" version of microsoft. If they get in now, they can debut Google Games with the release of Half Life 3, a more or less guaranteed hit.

Wouldn't shock me either. I think Google realizes that Steam is THE online game distribution network, and would love to have a peice of that pie.

I would more see Google buying STEAM and managing it from hereafter but not Valve's game development teams. I suspect this is an overhyped piece of crap journalism based on some preliminary discussion between Google and Valve about sharing server capability and TECHNOLOGY, perhaps royalty/development of steam/bandwidth/infrastructure/marketing of Steam stuff etc.

I doubt Google wants to handle developing PC games.

If they ever did buy Valve, I suspect they'd leave them pretty much autonomous.

Shovel up enough shit and some of it is bound to have a gold nugget in it...

The rumor is they want steam for the content delivery. Not just games but everything else as well.

So if they got it, you would have all kinds of software being sold.

I know mtv is a weird place to find news about tech related stuff. But here it is. I just dont see how it would be a good move for either of the companies Valve has so many big name developers coming over to Steam that they dont need or probably want to be bought out. Nerp hit it right on the head. Google (hopefully) doesnt want to get involved in game development. Distribution maybe but even then it would be more of an advertising deal than a buy out.

Google probably had no plans to own steam. Now with these rumors, they thought "Hey, that would be a good idea", and will own Valve by 2009.

I contacted Valve pr man Doug Lombardi who replied to my request for comment on this news with just two words: ?complete fabrication.?

Just to make sure Lombardi wasn?t being cagey, I asked if it?s be correct if we posted that (my words) ?Valve says Google isn?t buying the company.? He said that would be correct. So? no sale!

So there, Valve's PR said it's not happening...

... of course MOST of these types of buyout offers happen quietly with a gag on it until an agreement is reached so as not to tamper with share prices and whatnot. Plus Google isn't the type to go around trumpeting that it's going to buy someone lucrative right up front with the prospect of Microsoft or EA making some inane counteroffer.

Take it for what it is, a rumor. Just don't be too entirely surprised if in 6 months or so we hear this story breaking again...

It is just a rumor based on what SunnyD posted...but valve has built something unique and of value with steam. It had some serious growing pains early on, but its finally turning into a pretty solid platform. I don't know about google making games, but the platform itself isn't far from google's regular businesses and I could see them wanting to own or at least have a foothold with that.
