I've heard this before and people always say "They are never going to do it. They would loose their market share as the top browser." Well I believe they have already done it on the Google Play Store so it was just a matter of time before it happened on the desktop.

Google is an advertising firm. They make their money by selling us advertisements. Why in the hell would they want a program that blocks their customers ads from reaching us?

I put one in a few months ago. I was surprised how much faster web browsing was with ads blocked at the DNS level.

I don't get what their motive is by doing that. It's just one more reason to not use Chrome. It's not like they're actually going to stop people from blocking ads they're just going to force some of the people who use Chrome to switch to a proper browser like Firefox or Opera.

Though TBH I'm surprised that ads are still so easy to block in general. The fact that most ads are hosted on a separate domain makes it pretty easy to block. If they really wanted to, they would be hosted locally by each respective website using a php include() script. Would be much harder to block then.

Now that I think about it though, the people who 'wouldn't' switch are probably not running ad blockers anyway. Aside from some who need to use it for various tasks.

Firefox is already my go to browser at this point, with no script and AdBlock+ keeping it clean.

Some sites I dont want that stuff(typically when purchasing something), so just use Chrome instead

I don't have an issue with seeing legit ads.

My issue is the shady advertising companies some websites partner with (** COUGH - sounds familiar for some reason - COUGH **) that hijack your browser. For example, I quit reading USA Today because most of the time I have to disable my adblocker to see the article. A few weeks back they had an article on Ohio State football, so I disabled my adblocker to read it.

And guess what happened? I got a redirect from one their crappy ad partners that said my files were locked and to call a phone number to get them unlocked. I couldn't even close the browser the normal way, I had to CTRL-ALT-DEL to kill Chrome altogether to get rid of it.

If they find a way to get rid of that crap, I'll stop blocking all their ads.

My Synology router with Threat Prevention and Safe Browsing plugins running does my filtering already, plus AdBlock on FF. I'm really surprised at all the trash I see if I access a site a frequent from other than my network.

As for the FF vs. Chrome, FF allows me to control things that can't even be done with Chrome... It is installed on my laptop and desktop, but is probably way out of date since I never use it.

Yeah the system of ads on the internet is utterly broken and hackable. If google wants to eliminate ad blocker then they need to fix that problem with their browser first.

Just use Opera since it runs on the Chrome engine. Ad block is built in or you can use a 3rd party.

I've never used Chrome anyways due to it's inflexbility versus FF.

PiHole, or adguard dns (i'm using that now). Set router dns to 176.103.130.130 & 131, set computer dns to dhcp. Far better than adblocking extensions.

The ad companies did it to themselves. Had they stuck with static ads it would not be so bad, but now days it's just out of control. Most ads are also malware, then you have sites like Youtube that have actual commercials. Commercials, on the internet. Who would have thought?

I'm not sure what you're asking, I was just pointing out that it's probably not out of date even if you don't use it.
