Google Tensor in short details.

- 2 x ARM X1 2.8ghz
- 2 x ARM A76 2.25ghz
- 4 x ARM A55 1.8ghz
- GPU ARM Mali-G78 MP20 GPU

I wonder why Google didn't choose Cortex X1 + Cortex A710 + Cortex A510 for Big-Mid-Little configuration.

An interesting comparison, if we compare it to the rumors around Microsoft/AMD ARM SoC with Cortex X1 + Cortex A710 + Cortex A510 configuration.

They touched on the answer in your article and video: Google didn't go for the top performance on everything, they wanted just enough performance to do the photography and video applications that they wanted to be able to do. They aren't even running the a76 even close to the max clock speeds on it.

Those rumored laptops have far more power to work with and are coming months later.

It should work well for their purposes but I think they missed a good opportunity to keep the device viable for longer by not including the new A510... Those A55 are getting long in the tooth! I will skip this one and look forward for the next gen SOCs. Mediatek might be a viable option for the next cycle.

No doubt, it is much more then enough CPU power for premium "clean or stock Android Smartphone". :grinning:

There will be no hiccups in sight, either today or in a couple of years using Pixel 6. Here is Geekbench comparison vs 6/12 Zen2 R5 5500U and 6/12 Zen3 R5 5600U.Singlecore score is very good, or Cortex X1 2.8ghz vs Zen2 at 4ghz and vs Zen3 at 4.2ghhz

It's quite likely that the A76 was chosen because it has a low transistor budget, but a notable performance advantage over the A55 cores. It seems that the trend is going for two super performance cores for the threads that are most performance sensitive, two mid tier cores to handle background tasks that are time sensitive, and tiny cores for house-keeping and low priority background tasks. Those X1 cores are seriously big. The A77 and above aren't tiny. The A76 may have just struck the happy medium that they were looking for.

It looks to be around the sweetspot in perf/area. Considering Apple's A15 efficency cores also seem to perform almost in the A76 ballpark

Saw some good theories that Google with the previous Pixel phones has been seriously optimizing for A76. Using them for middle cores allowed them to keep those optimizations while adding the big cores for real performance uplift over the Pixel 5.

Mostly it’s nice to see that they are planning on supporting it for a reasonable amount of time. Hopefully the SoC holds up, I just ordered a 256GB P6 for my wife.

Perhaps I'm a rare bird but I haven't longed for better phone performance since I bought my Pixel 2 three years ago. Loads websites fast, scrolls smoothly, opens camera app quickly,... all were issues with my phones before this one. Perhaps Google has decided for their target market this chip is fast enough. It certainly is for me.

My family all recently switched from moto g7 powers and Stylus (8) models to Samsung A52 5Gs. The 2x A76 + 6x A55 combo in it doesn't "feel" any better or worse than my work phone, which is the current iPhone SE. I also doesn't feel any worse than my in-laws' iPhone 12s. I don't yurn for any more performance than what I have.
