Google Talk?

google talk is nice, but terrible if you have more than a handful of contacts (unless you use a 3rd party client so you can actually group things). I like it because it logs things and I can use google to search my logs.

With google talk, you can set to be offline to some contacts, but online to others (like ICQ) can't you? Also are the messages real time or do you send them?

you can't be offline to some and online to others I believe.

Google talk/chat is instant messaging. Offline conversations happen if say you disconnect while talking to someone... it ends up in your inbox, to which you can reply to, but it will be an email conversation there.

I use Gmail+talk regularly (and the other popular networks quite infrequently). I wish Gmail talk would add chat support for Safari though.

Wonder why? That's surprising. Seems like a standard feature. ICQ had that 10 years ago. What about yahoo?

this really irritates me because MSN doesn't have it. They now have it so you can "appear offline" and still chat with certain ppl but its really buggy and doesn't work well.

I long for the ICQ glory days

Google Talk has a very nice interface and is not boated with stuff you do not need, plus you can use it while you are on gmail through the gtalk thing.

Yup. Apart from the invisible mode, you can right-click individual contacts/groups and select "Appear Online to xxx/Appear Offline to xxx/Appear Permanently Offline to xxx"

Yes it will and here's how, give it a try:

Login to Yahoo IM!
Right click the contact you want to appear offline to, select stealth settings then choose either offline or permanently offline

All your other contacts will see you as online but that one person will see you as offline.

Does that answer your question? 😛

Yes thanks Rossman, and theprodigalrebel. I haven't installed it. I wanted to find that out first.
