This is genius, and the best part about this is that the technology used to make this happen is simple.
Simply get a small team of google programmers to work on writing a piece of software that would interface a 360 degrees panoramic camera (I am sure Google can afford the best one there is) with a computer system linked to GPS. Then all they have to do is send cars to drive through the city with the systems mounted on them, it is time consuming obviously however the results are brilliant!

Oh Google, you never cease to surprise me!

Local.live.com has a birds eye view, although it's nowhere near as close up, but it does allow a slightly different angle to the top down, and you can check out almost what stores are at retail parks etc.

It is a panoramic shot. You can see some of the picture borders where things don't line up and the exposures don't match perfectly.

Because you can find out exactly where a person lives and what their building looks like from the street level, not a top down shot.

That's not stalking. Stalking is when you go there in person.

Amazon's search site has had this for a while, IIRC. Checking back, it looks like it's been taken down. Maybe Google acquired the images from A9.

Guys from A9 have been doing it for ages. They actually gave a lecture at my school a couple years ago. Apparently they just had a car with a camera and a GPS receiver driving around all the streets and recording images along with location continuously. Apparently the cops in DC weren't too happy about some strangers driving around with a camera on their roof recording things :D

Which a stalker would do by camping out nearby anyways...

This might be useful to go nab a few trolls or to verify residences. I can see quite a bit of abuse potential though...

For my stalking of everyday people using cameras, I go to sites like this.

I linked one that just shows kittens mostly, to be less creepy.

Uh.. Isn't taking pictures of every address in the United States going to be one hell of a monumental task?

It is! But if you ever read the history of early map making, you would know that was an even bigger task (and involved danger and deaths). Lewis and Clark are probably one of the more famous ones you might know about.
Ah, yes, this is true. Thanks for that perspective.

Man.. I would give my left nut to be able to re-live Lewis and Clark's journey through their eyes.

Seriously. The thought of coming upon the Willamette Valley, pristine.. untouched.. for the first time gives me mega goosebumps.

I would have loved to see giant old growth trees where Portland now stands.. All the way down to the Willamette River. It would have been truly amazing.

I didn't hear of this until just now. This is incredibly amazing IMO. The image resolution is decent, but as a test I tried to zoom in towards windows, license plates, etc, but it got too pixelated then to be able to make out anything.

I'm not sure what is the reason for this, other than expanding on their maps obviously, especially because of the potential for abuse in regards to say stalking, privacy, and terrorism (some terrorist groups in Iraq and elsewhere use Google Earth to plan operations and whatnot).

Though IMO, Google was founded, developed, competed with, then flew by so many other companies who were once the leaders in search engines, maps, audio and video search, web-based email, etc... Plus they offer a lot of free software and development tools and contribute in so many areas. And much of it is free, yet they make a killing with mostly basic, non-intrusive ads. Quite a company... I hope they continue with such amazing innovations but don't get too shady.

Didn't Yahoo have that several years ago?

Edit: Spoke too soon. This is a bit more advanced than what Yahoo had/has, I believe.

theres a button that says "street view, new" or some crap. Next to all the other options.

However its only up for 5 major cities right now. So yours might not be on there yet.
