Internet giant Google on Friday started translating Persian, also known as Farsi, in a move that could dramatically help spread information on the Iranian election crisis.
World news events of the past had few reporting electronically, but hundreds are in Iran.

World news events of the past had few reporting electronically, but hundreds are in Iran.

The Google Translate Web page is allowing users to translate Persian text into English and vice versa, the company said.

The service is free, "whether it's a news story, a Web site, a blog, an e-mail, a tweet or a Facebook message," a Google news release said.

"We feel that launching Persian is particularly important now, given ongoing events in Iran."

Last week's contested presidential election has led to widespread protests and turmoil in the country.

Tens of thousands of Iranians have demonstrated in daily protests since, and the government has restricted coverage by news media and social networking sites.

"Google Translate is one more tool that Persian speakers can use to communicate directly to the world, and vice versa -- increasing everyone's access to information," the statement said.

The company said it is working to add 40 more languages that Persian can be translated into.
