Google Spreadsheets

I seriously doubt I will stop using MS Office. It is too prevalent in the market place. HOWEVER, if a new standard begins to surface, I would reconsider that stance.

I used to say I would never use anything but Netscape. Then Netscape came out with v5...and it sucks...so never say never.

probably not, Excel has a lot of financial plug-ins that I use....then again who knows, Google might incorporate all that stuff in.

Wait and see I guess...I signed up 🙂

Don't know if you guys have seen this website or not, ThinkFree. It is an online Office suite and provides 1gb of storage for your documents. It is pretty awesome and does just about everything you need.

No charts and no macros, I won't be switching anytime soon. A spreadsheet program is useless to me without charts, it's nearly useless without macros.

Not that I won't try it out, the live spreadsheet sharing part has potential.

In this corner, the up and coming media and software giant, Google

In the other corner, the old and archiac Microsoft, which has delayed Vista yet again..

My money is on Google. They have been hiring MS software developers for years and seem to have the upper hand when it comes to functional software.

Google is well positioned to really take a bit out of MS, especially if they have a few tricks up their sleeve.. There is some speculation that Google was going to create an OS.

why would google create an OS? all their applications are platform independent. this is MS's worst fear, and the reason MS took down netscape. platform independent applications mean that windows is no longer a valuable property, but is just a commodity like any other platform.

I still have a problem putting potentially confidential information up on a web site for others to hack.

I will continue to use a desktop product, be it EXCEL or Openoffice.

Kind of disapointing that they don't support OpenDocument format directly

I'm not sure I'll have alot of use for it - the collaboration bit is interesting. It could be interesting if they offer an API for it similar to Google Maps so you could easily incorporate a spreadsheet into your own web page.

For office use, hell no.

yeah. i mean big companies would never adopt to these google projects. and for god's sakes gmail is still under beta??

2007 Beta 2 just came out and I like it very much. Although google is known for creating innovative products and ideas, google spreadsheet means nothing to me right now.

Yea, it's not going after Excel directly. As many have pointed out, there are many things you'd never put out on a web based spreadsheet, regardless of how good it is. But a collaborative, access-from-anywhere spreadsheet has some appeal as well, and its a niche that Excel can't fill at this time.
