Not too surprising as they're consolidating projects and they're pushing everything to Hangouts.

can't you still do this directly from google voice?

Yes for now. They're going to kill it off later this year to focus on Hangouts.

  • If you're in the US and Canada, you can still receive and send SMS messages via Google Voice. Please visit the Voice Help Forum here if you have specific Voice questions: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/voice
  • If you're outside of the US and Canada, you can opt into the new Hangouts to continue receiving SMS messages as follow-me (i.e. if you're offline and receive a Hangout message, you'll get an SMS message). Please visit the Hangout Help Forum here if you have specific Hangout questions: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/hangouts

ugh, hangouts.

i have voice. because of that, my voicemails show up in my gmail inbox, and my received text messages show up in my gmail inbox. i can respond to text messages from my gmail inbox, and they'll be there in the conversation view. but sent SMS messages through hangouts don't show up in my gmail inbox. they don't show up in hangouts on the computer, either. why? MMS messages don't show up in my gmail inbox either. but it does show up in the google.com/voice history. why can't i just have one integrated inbox for everything? isn't that the point of buying into the ecosystem? is there someone in charge or is it still just all little fiefdoms in google with everyone just doing their own thing? maybe that's what they're finally doing. but i doubt it.

oh and the contact management sucks. i hit contacts from google voice. ok, big list of contacts. i want to change the call screening behavior. so i hit the contact. nope, can't do that from the contact itself. no, you have click on the contact in your voice history. which isn't a full contact, it's a half contact. so i look at call screening options. "Default" "On" or "Off" are the selections. "Default" is the group default, so whatever group you happened to have put them in in circles. or in contacts. for some reason, not the same. no integration. but you can't change the group from the half contact where the call screening option is. no, you have to go elsewhere for that.

seriously, no integration at all. none of it was built to really work together.

Agree with all this.

Thanks for the other routes guys.

Does yahoo still do SMS? I think I might go that way. Having it and e-mail integrated was so convenient.
