Yes, you would think that there would be better ways for a church to spend the money, but it was not my call.

While the thought of using live grasshoppers or crickets did cross our minds, as it would be highly amusing, it just wouldn't go over very well.

I didn't read plastic, Haha. 😀 Yep, that's such a tremendous waste and not something you'd expect from a sensible church.

$800 on fake grasshoppers. Do you have any idea how much that would help the less fortunate? Does your church have a sister parish in a developing nation? The church I went to before I moved had one in central America, and I know that $800 would go a looooong way for them. Your church sounds like a load of bunk. 🙁

My general thoughts are along the same lines on the money usuage, but it is not my church or decision. I am in the special effects business, and they hired our company to do the effects.

Do what churches all around the world pretty much tell you to do, imagining something that isn't there. I'm sure kids can easily do this.

I kid kid. No seriously, use fire ants.

wasnt the JC all about teaching? this would fall under that category i suspect

if they are spending 4 grand to get visitors to watch a show, charging for entry, you can guarantee it is to raise funds for the church. im sure they have the almighty dollar in mind when spending a bit to make more.

10,000 grasshoppers, whats next...

Well, if I remember correctly, after the locusts came the darkness and then the death of the first born males.

I hope he doesn't ask where to find 10,000 dead babies next.

Jesus would clearly approve of spending money on loads of plastic as a little one-shot prop.

Just load up a high-def video of that episode of Planet Earth where they showed a genuine locust swarm of many many millions of them.
It shows a much more realistic version of the swarm, it's less cheesy, and it's a good series.

Followed by a lesson on circumcision from the lovable foreskin mascot, Floppy Franky the Foreskin.

I don't think he was so much into teaching about the wrath of god, which is what the plagues were, right?

Step 1: Get 10,000 live crickets
Step 2: Get mesh net large enough to go from bottom to top of room
Step 3: Spray mesh with glue
Step 4: Throw crickets on net
Step 5: Rig net to be drawn between audience and stage or however you want it
Step 6: Release remaining live crickets that didn't stick in girls bathroom

Crickets for 35 cents each

(I don't see an option to buy just grasshoppers, but maybe that's available)

Certainly not a good plan for 10,000 of them though 😛

EDIT:

+Church Discount

At theBIGzoo, we strongly support churches in their effort to help their communities. We gladly offer a 30% discount to churches buying for children's ministries, Vacation Bible Schools, puppet ministries, youth groups, and other ministry-related activities. To get started, simply APPLY NOW.

$833 gets you 3,400 of them

How big is this room going to be?

Since these are bigger (3"?), it might not take as many.

random room estimate size of 30x40 will still give you almost 3 of them per square foot.

Jeff7,
We have been considering doing a video projection of a swarm of locusts, though it would probably require atleast 4 projectors, and some smoke machines to add to the effect. We were just attempting to pursue the plastic grasshoppers first.

Buy a bunch of Chapurrines. Not only are they cheaper than plastic, but the crowd can eat them when the shows over. I know how to fix this plague, with some salt and lime!

OP, try this. Get a rubber stamp with a grasshopper such as here and an ink pad, green construction paper and scissors. Cut construction paper into roughly 2" square pieces and fold in half. Now stamp each side of the folded paper with the grasshopper stamp. Extra hands at church will make this a doable project in one or two evenings.
