And not gonna lie, Google Now - "Restaurants near me" is awesome. For the longest time I was the only person in family/friends that had Android. I found so many good restaurants in cities I wasn't familiar with through that. My friends would usually put me in charge of finding food using that function whenever we traveled. :p

I use Restaurants near me in Google Maps all the time. Same with Home Depot near me and pretty much anything I'm looking for.

So many on the left say that because they use their assholes to shit out of that it's OK for Google/Apple/Amazon/Zuckhole to screw them up their asses without permission.

I disagree, but we're a vanishing minority now.

I feel like I should report you somewhere...

No, just someone that gets amused watching lefties and young people walking around sucking on their cell phone pacifiers.

Don't forget your Trump tweeting incessantly from his cellphone pacifier too.
It's amazing how you immediately made this a partisan topic. You are truly the worst on this forum.

So you speculate that conservatives don't use Android, iOS, windows, etc....and that "so many on the left" not only use those, but sustain an anal screwing willingly after a thorough review of the terms of service. Good to know.

Real conservatives use flip phones.

Don't use google. There was a time not that long ago there was no such thing as google, and you got along fine without them. You still can.

Google is my second brain. I wonder if Dogpile still works.

So actually a serious conversation here....

Both my parents and wife's parents grew up in podunk small towns. They HATE traveling to big cities. Hate driving in big cities. And generally just panic at the thought of any sort of traffic.
Which made me wonder...how much of it is because they aren't used to GPS/Smart phones and never had them when they were younger.

Seriously, there are a lot of cities I'd never think about trying to drive in blindly because I have zero fucking clue where I'm going or trying to follow signs. But plug an address into a phone, grab the wheel and go. No big deal. My phone tells me everything I need to know so I can concentrate on the road instead of looking for signs or fumbling with a sheet of paper printed from Mapquest (hello late 1990's!).

Having GPS and directions at my fingertips has made my drives in unknown cities so much more enjoyable. I have to wonder if some of the paranoia and anxiety on my parents part is simply because of an absence of information available to them.

I have no idea what that means but you do understand how account privacy works, right?

Local and external encryption of your account ensures that privacy. I do a fair bit of code for different systems that interact with the google systems including the system that encrypts your account information across all systems.

You are trying to make something appear as if it is something it isn't and I wonder what your motive for that is? Is it just ignorance or is it some grudge against google?

He suffers from concern O.C.D.

While true, Google can make your life so much easier in certain situation. If you're in a foreign place visiting, Google Maps along with Google Translate can be a lifesaver. Google Maps was amazing and insanely useful during my Europe vacation trip couple weeks back and made getting around and taking public transit a breeze even though I couldn't speak or read the local language. Could I have managed and had the same experience with paper maps? Maybe but doubtful.
Maybe, but I value my privacy more. I also usually just wing it when I'm out and about. Things are more interesting when they just happen. Keep my eyes open, and stop in if I like the looks of something. You can find some special places that way, that aren't gonna hit the top search terms or ratings. You can also find some crap that way too. But that's what happens when you roll the dice.

For maps, I use osmand. That gets me where I'm going, with few frills, but I can also use it without data, since the maps reside on my phone. I don't have my phone registered with google, though I do have a gmail account in k9 I keep for legacy purposes. That's been deprecated, and isn't used at all for new mail. Other than that, I occasionally watch youtube without logging in, and once in a blue moon I use translate. Google's got some stuff on me, but not much.

Excuse me! I was still doing that up to ~2012 to sometimes now. (but I updated to Google maps!)

And did you review the code of the Mokee app osmand? Of course not.

The real deal here is that you don't have to go through these lengths at all, just compile and install AOSP, the code is available and install ufw or an equivalent firewall which lets you set the rules it runs fine on any linux distro including android.

You are needlessly complicating things for your use of your own hardware and I don't see the point but sure, if you already live in a bunker and collect your own piss then why not this too?

I bet not ONE of your computers runs OpenBSD because when it comes to convenience that was a step to much.

No. OpenBSD is too niche. I run debian. Just as good, just as auditable, but 1000x more compatible with the world ;^)

Hmmmm...

https://www.12news.com/article/mone...rs-on-cell-phones-as-millennials-do/478751449

That bad habit of bringing a smartphone to the dinner table is certainly a generational problem. But not just for the generation you're probably thinking about.

It turns out, baby boomers are just as obsessed with their smartphones as millennials. The older generation now spends two and a half hours on their phones every day, on average.

"That's pretty close to millennials -- at 171 minutes a day," said technology expert Andrea Smith.

According to a T-Mobile survey, baby boomers aren't just looking at content online. They're posting, too.

"In fact, they're 19 percent more likely to share content on Facebook, than any other generation," Smith said.
