No, all were taken in 8mp with my Nexus 5. The issue seems to be that it still has the Google+ limit of 2048x2048 and anything bigger which all of my photos are 3200x2368 in 8mp. Hopefully, it's something that just needs to be updated on their side and they'll do it quickly as I'm about 335mb from the 15gb free limit.

You said you set it to Original quality. That counts against your gdrive limit. Only the "High Quality" settings is unlimited.

But shouldn't my original(full) quality photos at 8mp meet the qualifications for being under 16mp?

The first benefit of the service is freeing up storage on your phone. As long as you’re cool with a maximum resolution of 16 megapixels and/or 1080p video, Google Photos provides free, unlimited cloud backup for everything you shoot. For higher-resolution shots and 4K early adopters, there are also options. You get a free 15GB of Google Drive storage, but then the price ramps up to $1.99 per month for 100GB and $9.99 per month for 1TB.

Photos uploaded to Google Photos have a maximum resolution of 16 megapixels, or 4920 x 3264 pixels. Any photos larger than that will automatically be downsampled by Google. This is fine for most current smartphone models, but images captured by any decent DSLR will see their quality reduced dramatically when they’re uploaded to Google Photos.

To get unlimited you have to choose the "High Quality" setting which recompresses the photos (and downsamples them to 16mp if they are larger). Choosing the "Original" setting will use the gdrive space. The idea that there is unlimited 16mp photo uploads is incorrect.

BTW: was picasa updated with this new stuff? To get the free setting I am guessing you need to use the photos.google.com website or the app.

Completely non-scientific test. I uploaded an ~8mp image which was ~2.5MB at the "high quality" setting and got a ~1.5MB file as a result. Pretty significant change, but didn't really notice any difference in viewing them.

So complicated. I cannot deal with this. I guess I'll just wait for Picasa update so it will let me upload with HQ setting instead of Original setting.

Lifers having such hard time understanding 2 options...
Original is original even if is 5x5 pixel is not compressed by Google and will count against your Drive space.
HQ is reduced to 16MP if bigger and compressed by Google the storage of this photos is free and unlimited.

you can't apparently. Actually I figured you could just put something in the description, but that doesn't appear to work when you search for it. Kind of shocked it doesn't search that field honestly.

Also the extra compression is pretty obvious on a lot of photos now that I had a chance to play with it. Definitely would not recommend using the unlimited setting for any important photos.
