As much as I need the money because I am a 99%er this is a bad idea.

I have no sympathy for the bad things about to happen to people that sign up for this.

Google offering to pay web users to track their every move

Less than a month after announcing a controversial new privacy policy that shares user data across all its sites with no opt-out option, Google is introducing a system to monitor all online activity of those who participate in a program called Screenwise.

By signing up for Screenwise and installing a browser plugin (only Google Chrome is supported at present), you'll be given $5 in store credit on Amazon. For every three months you continue to provide Google with browsing data, you'll earn an addition $5 gift card, up to a total of $25.

For those willing to make their online lives a completely open book, Google plans to offer a more elaborate tracking system that utilizes special hardware. The device, which connects to your broadband router, will monitor the online activity of all computers in your home. This program, which isn't available yet, will compensate participants $100 for signing up and $20 a month for up to a year.

I'm finally thinking of switching to bing. But I have to know first ... are they any better? Does microsoft also pull this monitoring of everything bullshit?

Google recently gave money to several right-wing political groups.

So much for 'do no evil' and I'm now avoiding their products. www.bing.com.

Google was the #5 contributor to President Obama during the 2008 election cycle.

Eric Schmidt, Google's executive chairman and former CEO, has been the most active political contributor among Google's executives, having given $20,000 to the National Republican Senatorial Committee in both 2009 and 2010 -- as well as $17,500 to the National Democratic Senatorial Committee. (He also gave $10,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2010, and $10,000 combined to two Republican PACs.)

Schmidt gave the individual maximum contribution limit of $4,800 apiece ($2,400 for primary election funds and $2,400 for the general election) to Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), and Harry Reid (D-Nev.). Schumer sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee on Antitrust, Competition Policy, and Consumer Rights -- the subcommittee that is investigating Google's dominance of the Internet search industry.

Schmidt also made two $2,000 contributions to Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.); a $2,400 and a $2,000 contribution to Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.); one-time $2,000 contributions each to Sens. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.); and $1,000 contributions to Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) and Reps. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.), and John Garamendi (D-Calif.).

:hmm:

Guess they play both sides...JUST LIKE 99% of all corporations.

OH THE EVIL! THE EVILLLLLLLLLL!!!

Google offers services to you for free. They make money in part from advertising. Someone has to pay the bills for bandwith, developers, servers, etc. In order to make this more efficient they track your account usage across all of their services. I fail to see what the problem is.

You can use hotmail, yahoo, etc and still view youtube videos. Use firefox and have it delete everything after each session.

So that's what they were testing in Google employees domiciles. Creepy.

It seems to me that some types of people would be significantly under-represented in their data, while other groups would be over-represented. The people who spend half their time on pirate bay, 4-chan, etc., are probably not going to sign up, while the people who do nothing "wrong" will be more likely to sign up.
