Why are updates even important anymore ?? This isn't Android 3.0 that needs to be upgraded to 4.0.
My Samsung S7 edge is on 6.0 now and I honestly have not thought once that I can't wait till it gets 7.0.
New, useful features are far and few in betweens every updates.

I am not confident in my ability to predict the future, maybe you are. What will be the new features 6 months, 12 months, 24 months (etc) from now? I don't know. However I do know if something new does come up, I would find it more convenient to upgrade my phone's software rather than have to go out and buy a new device.

But I suppose, the only thing that really is needed is regular security updates. Of course, most OEMs fail at that as well.

So now both Google and Verizon are saying ALL updates will come from Google and Verizon won't get in the way.

Good news for Verizon folks.

That's a good thing, now if they would just allow the bootloader to be unlocked. I don't see what's stopping them from unlocking it. I've had a nexus 6 on Verizon before and it had an unlocked bootloader. Then I had my 6p on there too and people were telling me they wouldn't allow it because it's not on the whitelist.

Either way, both phones accepted signal and data without issues.
