I don't really understand/buy it based on what is provided. Under the second "black lives matter ferguson" query, it does exclude a couple stories about the shooting, but it also excludes stories about BLM/Palestine, BLM and vehicular manslaughter, etc. The alternative hypothesis would be that Google's algorithm excludes certain results based on the breadth of the query. E.g., let's say "black lives matter" is a hot search but is also one that would yield tons of results; therefore, only news articles that hit an arbitrary threshold of, say, 100 units will reach the feed. However, because "black lives matter ferguson" is more specific, the threshold is reduced to maybe 20 relative units, and therefore minor stories like ones about that shooting or about BLM people going to Palestine are able to appear.
