Google Music finally adds song matching!

Where do you do this from anyway? I went to music.google.com and I don't see anything for it just the old upload music thing.

Anyone know how they are doing the actual matching? Do they analyse the music content and compare against a database in the same way that Shazam and SoundHound do? Or do they just compute the hash of the music file on your system and check for the hash in a database?

I'm not sure, they might just use the ID3 tags and check it against the play music store, I know you can only match stuff from their store.

EDIT: Just to add the music manager above isn't any different from the one before for me...I see no options to match music.

If it's like Amazon, then it's just an automatic process. I already had my music uploaded on Amazon Music, then one day they told me some of my music was matched, they provided me a list of what those songs were and I could now listen to them at a higher bit rate.

I haven't heard nothing from Google regarding if they matched my music or what is going on. So Google definitely doesn't seem to be doing as good as job as Amazon had at informing the users and advertising the service... But I guess Amazon is also charging money and Google isn't. So more motive for Amazon to push it.

You have to add a folder in the Music Manager and in my case for example it said uploading but the songs were going at a fast rate, the scan isnt instant but way faster than actually uploading them

Yeah, it's slow compared to iTunes's matching, but a lot faster than uploading.

I believe the matching is done via acoustic fingerprinting, same as Amazon and iTunes. And, like them, I fully expect problems with regards to explicit vs clean content being mixed up.

this would have been awesome 6 months ago before i uploaded 150 GB the normal way

Yeah, I've uploaded most of my music as well. I'm hoping that it'll fix my album art for me though and scan in music that it couldn't upload because of the format since I'm too lazy to do both of those myself.

Any chance they'll do the same for movies and TV shows? I know someone who would love to hear that.

From what I've read, it'll match the songs but won't alter the metadata...so I don't think it'll do anything for your album art. They really ought to add a sort of "cleanup" option in that regard.

is it just me, or are the servers getting rapped?

first 1000 the other day was fast, now its going slow. took a few days (on and off) and now im at 3100 out of 5100

so how does this NOT promote piracy?

Whats stopping me from grabbing the mp3 from a youtube music video and matching it onto Google Play?

I'm kinda curious about this. Not because of any recent piracy mind, but from stuff I have from back in the Napster/Limewire days. I'm far too into audio quality to pirate any more. I must have the actual CD.

I wonder how or when it decides to do that. I upload from my desktop as I make MP3s from FLAC files specifically for GM. I spend considerable time and effort tracking down CDs with superior mastering, or ripping vinyl. I don't want my music to be matched up against some overcompressed "remaster". Thankfully it doesn't seem to supersede my choices.

even if you upload FLAC GM will auto transcode to 320 MP3

i assume the match just matches to 320 as well

Ya, I v0 mp3 them before I upload. I'll have to keep on eye on my uploads to make sure I'm getting exactly what I want. I just tested out another upload, this time a mono pressing and it worked out okay.

I'm hoping that in addition to ID3 tags it scans at least part of the track for a sound signature. Someone can fake ID3 tags to get any tracks they want if it doesn't scan part of the actual song. If that is the case, maybe the different masterings will register as a different disc.
