Update: Having trouble actually snagging it? We've had inconsistent results ourselves, probably due to the sheer number of people trying to access it at once. In the meantime, while you can keep hitting download, you could also take a minute or two off, tweet an "iTunes is using Apple Maps to find the Google Maps app" joke and try again later.

Looks like massive server overload. lol

Alright, turn-by-turn too! I guess I'll play with it tomorrow. My first comment is:

Why did you have to make the two finger swipe that turns it into 3D-ish mode, the exact opposite direction as it was in Apple maps. I think Apple had the correct swipe direction. And it's definitely a little more sluggish than Apple maps. At least on my 4S

Finally, will try it out.
Once a jailbreak is released, I might upgrade to ios 6.

Couldn't find it in the search. I used to link in engadget's review from my iphone.

Really surprised they included voice guided navigation. Always thought that was an android only thing google wanted to do.

Google maps on android is two finger swipe down.

once apple launched their maps all bets were off. google wants you using their services regardless of device.

Yea, scrolling isn't as smooth as I'd like. I thought it was just my iPhone 4.

It's smooth enough for me. Not as smooth as iOS maps but good enough for me to use it as the primary map solution since it's much more useful and detailed.

This may be one of those inverted vs non-inverted joystick debates but swipe up should knock the top of the map down. That makes sense to me.

I think the app is really well done. It's significantly better looking that the old iOS Maps app.

What confuses me is how it looks and feels compared to Android Google Maps. Same thing with the GMail app. Are the two separate teams working on iOS apps vs Android apps? If Google's Android apps looked as good as they did on iOS it might go a long way to getting me to switch.

So does this have voice turn by turn nav for all iPhones including 3gs and 4 or is that limited it to 4S and 5 like the Apple maps? One thing I liked about Apple TomTom maps is it tends to stick with the major interstate for routing while Google Maps has a habit of showing you the shortest and quickest route which usually involves smaller highways and neighborbood roads. That can be really irritating at times since you can't use cruise control because of the constant change of speed and those roads are usually not straight and smooth like the major interstate thus requiring your attention. I know you can choose alternate routes but routes it displays still tend to favor smaller, less traveled roads. So for longer road trips, I prefer Apple TomTom maps. In the city and cogested areas, I prefer Google Maps.

It doesn't require Siri so it should work on 3GS and up. I believe it requires iOS 5.1.1, which must be the lowest version that gives them the ability to push turn by turn directions. I tried it this morning, and with the app suspended and even the phone off, it continues to use the local notification system to update you on your turns. The only downside is that you don't get the map as the background on your lock screen.

I think I still like Apple's iOS map app more, but if I do, it's just barely. If this the caliber app tht Google could have developed for mapping then Apple should have stopped development on the iOS Maps app years ago and just let Google do their own thing.

As much as I like my iPhone, it is telling that my most used apps are actually google apps: chrome, gmail, and now google maps. I guess the music/podcast apps are my most used technically... Google, you need to get on that! ;-)

I never understood why apple maps clears your current directions when you want to make a change. You end up having to re type the damn thing.

I think apple maps looks a lil better still, but gmaps looks good too. Overall, google's got apple beat.

I'll run both map apps. Get two sources for traffic. Google traffic services shows more local (Toronto) street conditions over Apple's. But I've encountered a few misreported red zones on Google. Street was entirely empty but reported to have traffic.

Apple maps always saves a bunch of recent directions. You have to click on that icon that looks like a book.
