Google Maps pinch zoom issues - Android

Is it me or does my Milestone (GSM Droid) running Google Maps 4.4 or whatever it is... this should be the US version, but I see it sometimes messing up using pinch zoom.

Sometimes I pinch zoom and it freaks out and zooms in like 5x more after I let go. I'm not really sure if this is my device itself or this is how Android is.... Basically if I pinch zoom in or out, sometimes it moves a bit or zooms in/out a little bit more. It's almost like it's SUPER sensitive to how I let go of my fingers. I'm sure our fingers don't naturally just lift up in the Z direction perfectly orthogonally. There must be some x-y shift (although very minor) when lifting our fingers up which might be why my device is freaking out? I can confirm this is NOT an issue in browsers like xScope or Dolphin.

I'm a little peeved sometimes, and of course my iPhone friends will use my phone sometimes and go "WTF... shitty pinch zoom" and laugh. I've been an iPod Touch user for a while and this has never been a problem, but somehow on Android it's meh. Apparently I see some people complaining about it on DroidForums.net too, so it's not just me... Odd.

gmaps doesn't have unlimited zoom levels. when you let go, it will jump to the closest zoom level, be that in or out. i think iphone might take the images received for one level, and scale between them as well, but its been a while since I used gmaps on an iphone so I can't be sure.

I've noticed this, but then I'm running Froyo on a G1, so I just thought it was me stressing old hardware to breaking point.
