Works fantastically on my Samasung a920. If only it could sense your location from the built-in GPS...

What built in GPS?

All cell phones have GPS built in. It's mandated by the FCC. Most carriers only enabled it on their phones when 911 is dialed. Look in your phone's menus for Location-Based Service (LBS).

Maybe all verizon phones or sprint phones but not ALL phones have gps. Gps was just one option carriers could use to satisfy the e911 requirements.

Err.... Garmin Mobile looks like a commercial app.

Looks like it's supposed to be $9.99/mon and only supports Sanyo phones but it works with my Samsung A940.

it is free check out ringerpost here

So it's free because there's no charge for it. Nice. If you look at the site, it's full of hacked, "free" apps and games.

Built in GPS?? How does one make this work on a Samsung A900?

just go to the website, punch in your phone number with area code and you'll get a text message with a link. click go on the link and it'll take you to a internet page where you can download the app. allow it to download and install. once it does, and once you click run, it will ask you if you want to allow it access to the location device, say always allow, and then it will ask if you want to allow it access to the internet. put always allow for that as well. thats it, you're good to go after that. i have the a900 also and it worked PERFECTLY.

BTW...the above walkthrough was for the garmin install.

for the google maps mobile install, just go to www.google.com/gmm i think thats the right website. and then just download and install the file. it too works flawlessly from the A900.

i have unlimited internet, opera mini, google maps, and now garmin. oh and also the sprint vision which includes live tv and free serius sattelite streaming...so im pretty much set with EVERYTHING.

once again, thank you op!! 🙂

I think Verizon uses the less-popular "BREW" on all their phones, so java-apps don't work on them 🙁. I really do hate how Verizon is so crappy for data-plans (data-anything for that matter). Makes me want to just pay the $175 ETF and get the Sprint SERO plan so I can have unlimited power vision with a Samsung A920. 🙁

I still can't get Garmin Mobile to get GPS signal on my A900. Has anyone had any luck, specifically with the Samsung A900.

I just tried it and my A900 threw an error message saying it was unable to find the GPS satellites.

If this has worked for someone's A900, how long did it take for you to acquire the satellite signal? I tried both indoors and outdoors and was unsuccessful on both attempts. I'm curious what your experience is.

Thanks!

i'm not entirely sure but it seems newer versions of garmin does not work on the a900. i think you can find garmin 2.1 here among the other apps. these apps are for the a900. you might have to register to download any stuff.

hey NoToRiOuS1 - what firmware version of the a900 do you have? I'm getting the same "satellite not found" error as nvmyz71.

v2.1 works well, but it lacks the highway and weather functionality that 3.0.3 has.....plus i'm still subscribing to the notion that there's NOTHING MY PHONE CAN'T DO

: )

thanks

Hi jm,

How did you get your Garmin to work on A900 ? I'm trying and it locates me in the map, but not TRACK me during navigation with turn-by-turn directions (get "satellite not found"). And, by Garmin 2.1, do you mean 2.0.1 ? If not, where did you get it ? If you don't mind, what is your phone's software and hardware version ?

Thanks !

I'm not sure if it's just me but every time when I open up browser on my RAZR, the web slows down frequently. It takes about five minutes just to get to mobile map. I haven't use the map YET. I have a feeling that I will do in the future.

Does any other razrs do that? Or is it just mine?? 😕

Just got this last week. Easily the hottest thing on my Treo 650 besides AIM and Xino.

Thanks for posting in this thread. I've been looking for Garmin for my a920 for quite some time. Google maps just didn't cut it.

I tried the Garmin ap, but I couldn't get it to install. When I entered my phone it shot back the message below, so I copied the URL and then just sent it via e-mail. I tried to click on the .jad file but it wouldn't open. I'm running the Treo 700w.

seems to me that many people are asking questions about this service

i thought i can provide a brief run down

-this service is not a gps navigation system
-this service is only comparable to yahoo maps/google maps/windows live local
-it works by connecting to the internet and download area maps to display on the cellphone, hence, the map collection is not stored on your cellphone.
-driving map/navigation part of this system is done on their centralized servers, you input 2 locations, then this information is transmitted via the internet to their centralized servers, then their centralized servers will calculate a route using real-time traffic stats, finally this information is sent back to you via the internet. (drawback of this is that, unlike a real gps nav system, your phone won't know where you are and it won't alert you right when you should make the turn)
-you will need web access on your cellphone to use this service, reference your carrier's dataplans. they range from 15-80 per month for unlimited access.
-regarding gps: this system has the potential to be integrated into a gps navigation system, but i don't see it happening anytime soon.
-Most cellphones do NOT have gps built in, and it's not mandated by the FCC, when you call 911 the most a cellphone carrier can can do is to triangulate your position from their nearest cellphone towers. my point is that this is not a tracking device, at least not at the moment. (conspiracy theorists will disagree with me but plz ignore them 🙂

this is all i know, if anything i have provided is wrong please correct me.

ps that garmin mobile java application looks funny, it might be a pirated copy? >.<
