Google maps driving me NUTZ

I am beginning to hate the fkng Google maps. Every time I visit the site (http://maps.google.com), it starts off with driving directions for some old crap I looked up long ago.

Is there any way to start with a general map of the USA and no default route? I don't have anything specifically configured as Home or starting point.

Solved - it only did it when launched from an IE Favorite as opposed to manually. But the link didn't contain any extra stuff in it! Odd.
