No mapping hooey for me. I rarely go where I don't know. On those occasions, I use paper maps.

Years back, a delivery driver called me to say he was nearby. I asked him where and how he was planning on getting here. He told me what his mapping hooey was telling him. I said ... Nope. River there. Ain't no bridge. Ain't never been a bridge. Ain't never gonna be a bridge. As far as I know, the mapping hooey things still ain't got that spot right.

I avoid the Goo whenever possible, but Earth is one thing I use ... sometimes. Noticed yesterday that a new aerial view was in place. For some reason, no 'imagery date' in showing, but I can pick out almost the exact date from the boards laying on my driveway. I know when I bought them and I know roughly when I moved and used them. Pins the date down to about three weeks last October.

Near my house the bus waiting area that is part of the school is actually considered a road on Google Maps. It's kinda interesting since it's called Church St on Google Maps and there is a church nearby. So it seems the algorithm just makes a guess based on the surroundings if they can't find the name of a street. The google maps car probably went through that bus area at one point to turn around so maybe it got registered as a road.

Where I'm living now there is a main highway that gets backed up in the morning. Google then routes everyone through a neighborhood bordering it to bypass traffic. This leads the neighborhood to be so backed up people can't get out of their driveways and get their kids to school. There is a big sign saying no through traffic from the highway but it is apparently not recognized by google. It would drive me nuts if I lived there.

Google maps has been known to take people on dangerous or even impassable routes from time to time.

There are many advantages to having a GPS but just like having a smartphone constantly in your hand they CAN easily become a distraction.

That does sound like it would be annoying. I live near a school and it's basically what happens on my street between 2:30 and 3:30 or so. I know not to plan any outings/arrival around that time as it's very hard to get in/out.

They put no parking signs this year but nobody really listens. My street is narrow enough as is without people parking on it. There's a section of grass between the sidewalk and road on the school yard side, they need to just remove that island part and make the road wider. It's city property anyway since it's the school.

Even the alleyways in my neighborhood have street view now.

Turned on airport mode, looked up the name of my grocery store, google maps gave me a list to choose from, then navigated me there just fine, just saying it was offline, no traffic data.

Offline maps are bueno

Didn't work with the v20 (Sprint) for whatever reason but with my current s20 (unlocked/Google Fi) the GPS does seem to fully function provided it has relatively current maps installed.

Still a bit of an "incomplete" answer though since both of our phones that worked offline have active service and the v20 (which doesn't) wouldn't navigate at all.

I have an old LG v30 (also Sprint) in a drawer somewhere and will try it this week when I get a chance. It's been "unlocked" since I paid it off. The v20 never unlocked properly and so I'm curious to see if that matters.

Actually I wish I had taken a screenshot of that. Would be cool if streetview kept historical data that you can go back to. Imagine in 50 years from now if you could go back to now and see what things looked like.
You can. Street view has a past slider you can use to see past versions of Street view...

Found myself. :D

Don't really see much, but that's me driving that Buick. Was my first car lol.
Well now, you were tailing a Ford truck. Foreshadowing of your future.

Funny enough the truck I am driving now had probably recently drove off the lot, brand new. :p

And now if I hit it too hard with the snow brush when breaking up ice, rust falls out from the bottom. Weight reduction!
