Google Maps and wifi location accuracy on Android with no phone/GPS.

Android device has no build in phone/GPS.

Using Google Maps and connected to my secure wifi gives my location (house bottom of blue dot) with a 60 feet accuracy.

Using http://whatismyipaddress.com/ and entering my IP address gives me a location 2.1 miles away.
Correct location is near train station (top left of map). Map is also provided my Google.

How does the wifi location work? Why the discrepancy?

We talked about this at work and thought it was the IP that gave you the location but that's obviously not the case.

in short, the record the position of every wifi AP using a real GPS, then checks against this database later.
