I have a group of four deer that live on my street in suburban Victoria. It is quite rare that I don't have to brake to avoid them at least once a week.

From the New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation

-- Hunters in New York harvested approximately 222,800 deer in the 2009 season, virtually the same number as were harvested statewide the previous season, according to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

I'm surprised the car/deer number isn't higher.

My crockpot wants that little skipper.

Do no evil, pshh, since when is killing not evil :D

I liked this quote

The deer was able to move and had left the area by the time the police arrived.
Yeah, and it went to a farm where it could eat oats and play with its other deer friends as well. Sure...

Obvious yes the population of New York is much larger than NZ, but my comment wasn't in the context of NZ. That number really seems very, very high to me (intuitively). I have no data to back it up, just seems really big to me.

And yeah the population of NYC is about double that of NZ.

I live here, and I have to dodge the bastards a couple times a month. I suspect I'm typical.

That has to be 1.5 million nationwide, right? (Not just Pennsylvania)
You know, the article is not very clear, but you have to be right, that would be unbelievable for just Pennsylvania. I just copied it without putting any thought into it.

I have a hard time getting that page to load too. I have to refresh it multiple times.

the New York State Department of Transportation estimates that 60,000-70,000 deer collisions happen per year in New York alone
What the fuck? How is that possible? I'm calling shens on that number.
It wouldn't surprise me. My dad's probably had at least 3 cars totaled in the past 10 years thanks to deer impacts, and one needed work on the rear passenger-side door when a deer rammed the car broadside after it trotted down a roadside hill. My mom's car also hit one head-on at about 45mph. She liked the car though, and was rather insistent that it be fixed. That was probably 15 years ago; the car's doing a lot better than the deer.

Luckily, I've not hit any, but damn there've been close calls. Also, if one crosses in front of you, it's always good to slow down, as there are likely to be more following without any awareness of what's on the road.

I'm also not sure if this is for all of Pennsylvania, or if it's just our insurance provider, but the usual deductible policies don't apply for deer impacts - insurance picks up the full cost of repairs. Yeah, the damn things seem to be everywhere, at least in rural areas.

Here are some more numbers from Wiki:

Those are just estimates based on extrapolating data from one state but you get the idea.
