Google Instant?

I hate it, it keeps refreshing the page while Im typing... So annoying, so I turned it off right away

If you dont even know what youre searching for, you fail
 
Started for me this morning, and after a few tries, I had to turn it off. It annoyed the hell out of me. Needless refreshes, unless, of course, you want more page views with more ads Ads ADS ADS ARGHGHJGH WARBLE WARBLE!!111

How about you just load the results of my 5 word search when I inform you that I am done by hitting the enter key?

Instead you want to run a search of the first word of my search,
then the first 2 words
then the first 3 words
then the first 4 words
then wow, you saved me one key press after I typed the 5th word

I'm pretty sure the first 3 or 4 searches it shows me are not very relevant.

Perhaps this annoyance will drive more people to Yahoo and Bing, even out the marketplace a bit.
 
Anyone else NOT seeing right-hand-side ads during/after searches? (Using Firefox)

Using IE8, I don't get "instant" search but I do get the ads.

Agreed. I mean I'm not annoyed by it, but I don't find it useful at all and quite a waste of their time.
 
I have a feeling this is for the layman, i.e. for those who don't know how to search properly. They can adjust their search as needed to find what they need.

For those of us who are award of the ins-and-outs of searching (like exact, boolean, etc) and who know how to search for exactly what we want, I feel like this will be pretty useless.

I dunno, it works pretty well whenever you want to do some kind of quick function, like unit conversions or word definitions.

I'm a google power user, but I can still appreciate this new approach. In fact, I find it makes it all faster. If one is a slow typer, however, I can imagine it would get rather irritating. Google can't keep up with me on some occasions, so I can power to the exact thing I am looking for, or along the way I can sometimes get a suggestion that might feature a different word that may get the results I am looking for faster. Knowing the tools to find what you are looking for can only get you so far, if the words you think to search aren't as useful as other words.
 
Google's my homepage, so I use it instead of the search bar if I open my browser with the intent of searching for something.

And everyone that's complaining about page refreshes must have seriously shitty internet connections. I don't experience any "refresh"...the page loads instantly as I type.

I didn't think about home pages. I have always used blank for at least 12 years. Mostly because I don't always have an internet connection when I open my browser.

I just set google.com as my homepage; vanilla, though I have used iGoogle on occasion.

To me, when I am constantly opening new tabs, getting to google right away is quite helpful, oh, 75% of the time. Other times I am trying to go to a specific webpage and opening to a blank tab and typing in the address is faster, but not nearly as often as doing something with google.

But it's also because with all of the tabs I always have open, my customized Firefox gets a little slow (which is why I have offloaded most web browsing to Opera), and my search bar is integrated into the address bar... even rather short searches tend to cause hiccups and it gets bogged-down for some reason, thus I am basically forced to use google.com in Firefox.
In Opera, I just use the address bar. I find Opera is a better overall browser when it comes to the browser and no addons. Chrome is lacking in that regard, and Firefox is definitely lacking. I do like Firefox as a better overall package, since I can get it customized to an insane degree, make it feel and act exactly as I want a browser to feel and act. Let's me get most things done faster, but I have to pay a price - especially due to my browsing habits, which leaves often over 40 tabs open at a time. And I have far more than that in Opera, but Opera remains more stable even over a time period of many days or even a week; Firefox, meanwhile, will just start eating up more and more memory the longer it is left open with so many tabs, especially when you add at least double the total number of tabs ever viewed, with tabs opening and closing over time.

I never said that their servers couldn't handle it, I was simply questioning the amount of unnecessary load and bandwidth it uses, for a feature many probably don't find useful.

I personally don't want my connection to do 20 searches each time I type in 20 letters, so I will be disabling it.
 
I don't get it. I like the autocomplete feature that puts in the suggestions as you type, but constantly searching and updating the results as each letter is typed is a waste of resources and does nothing to enhance my search experience.

Looks like turning the instant thing off also turns off auto-complete. That sucks.
 
I really wish they didn't remove the option to stop the auto suggest crap.

They really need to understand no one likes that kind of crap and forcing people to use it will only stop people from using their site.

At least you can still use their site such as this:

http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0&hl=en

that doesn't use it until they get around to removing that feature.
 
I wonder if this is geared for people who type at 20 letters per minute? (I also wonder what the average computer user's typing speed is.)
 
Really stupid from a user standpoint but brilliant from a business stand point.

Now google not only gets add impressions from what you search for but they also get add impression from things that the user is not actually searching for.

I too turned it off. While calling it annoying may be a bit of a stretch, I don't feel like I gained any benefit from it. Not that it matters that much; normally I use the toolbar search anyways.
