Frys' (at least the Sunnyvale store in the Bay Area) has the O'Reilly's 'Google Hacks' by Tara Calishain and Rael Dornfest
free after a mail-in Rebate of $15.00. It 's one per customer but you can pay cash and get another one for a friend .

My first posting on this forum. Hope I did'nt mess it .

USSRFry's Rebate

from constant personal experience, the rebate of fry's is a waste of a stamp and envelope,
unless it is a brand name manufacturer's

I am not a cheerleader of Fry's rebates, either...but at Fry's I buy only stuff I need and only when cheaper than other local stores. That way, when rebate checks don't show up, I am not that disappointed. I've had a success rate of less than 50% with Fry's.

I have worst experience with Fry's rebate. Purchased 6 rebate items last Black Friday. Only one got back so far (Belkin product). X-copy denied my rebate, they said the License ID does not match the UPC.

My recommendation, DON'T ever buy any rebate product from them! Unless, it is a wellknown brandname.

Success rate 30%.

Since Google changed its Search Engine Optimization techniques recently, this book may not be of much help.

It's not so important that it's a Fry's rebate--what matters more is who is processing the rebate and/or who the manufacturer is. If a manufacturer is big enough to use a regular rebate house like Parago or, as in this case, TCA, the chances are the rebate is going to be OK--not 100%, but very likely. When a manufacturer is small and processing its own rebates, well, then you never know, though I've had some good experiences as well as some not-as-good experiences where I had to call (though I did end up getting the rebates in the end).

Also, Fry's does have rebate specialists at the store who can help if you don't get a rebate but you need to first try to get it yourself, by calling whoever is processing the rebate (if there's no phone # on the rebate form you can sometimes Google one up). If that doesn't work, then they will step in.

As far as the search engine optimization changing, I think the focus of the book is more on how to use Google, including its more obscure features (first 70+ pages) and then the rest seems to focus on how to write programs that use the Google API (the code presented is in Perl, if it matters). So Google's algorithm tweaks probably don't impact much on the content of the book.

I haven't had a problem with Fry's rebates yet. Of course I purchase everything from them on an American Express card, just to be safe. If the rebate doesn't go through I tell AmEx to dispute the charges, and AmEx will keep blocking charges for damn near eternity. I've yet to do that with a Fry's purchase, but it works pretty damn well with any other companies. They're really motivated to iron out any wrinkles when they get their money taken away. :p

Yeah exactly, this book would need updating every 6 months to be worth looking at, even for FAR.

Not at any of the ones in the Bay Area. Sure wish they did!
Really? You sure? I could swear I bought my last purchase with AmEx. My damn brain....

It was the one in Fremont, on Auto Mall Parkway, where I bought stuff last.
