Google gives everybody a raise

How awesome!

Oh wait- I'd have to work for them to get the raise?

And I though "everybody" really meant everybody
 
That's the industry. It's feast or famine.

Look at Mathworks. Every year they give everybody in the company a huge trip. Last year, the gave the whole company a cruise to Mexico. All expenses paid. Everything from the plane ride, the parking, and the cruise itself. Then, later in the year, they had an all expense paid trip to the White Mountains (it included unlimited booze too)

Good news for them. It's a great way to ensure their talent stays with them and doesn't get picked off by the competition.

The employees at Google do work pretty hard though. Doesn't google provide a lot of services such as day care, pet care, food, sleeping quarters, etc so as to keep the employees on campus as long as they can?

This is why I believe Google is doing it. I heard other companies were trying to lure they employees away, which I kinda find hard to believe that anyone would leave. Google offers services to employees that no other company does that I know of.

Google also demands a pretty heavy work load from what I understand. Dinner's free because they expect that you'll want to grab dinner since you're working late.

I worked in big consulting for a while, so I completely understand. Friends and family thought the perks I talked about were pretty cool, but free food and free booze only goes so far when your obligations to the office/client extend well beyond a normal work day for everyone else. It was a no-brainer for me to move on when I was offered a lateral salary/career level to work a 40-45 hr week.

People leaving Google might think twice with a 10% increase, but my guess is they're already working 10% more hours than the average corporate associate at a similar/equivalent career level.
