All I'm finding is a bunch of rumor mills, and one guy mentioned it in a thread here. Does anyone have it? If you do, is it an invite-only thing or is there a link buried in google somewhere?

I have it but I am not supposed to blog about it. So forget I ever mentioned it.

If I had it, I would say its the best thing since toaster ready waffles.

But I am not allowed to discuss such things.

The GDrive service will provide anyone (who trusts Google with their data) a universally accessible network share that spans across computers, operating systems and even devices. Users will no longer require third party applications to emulate this behaviour by abusing Gmail storage.

In a Windows environment, most users know how to use the typical C: in "My Computer". Network drives work exactly the same but are given a different letter and the files within are not stored on the computer. If my suspicions are correct and GDrive is simply a network share, most applications could take advantage of this service without modification.

Man, Google is skynet. Started off as a search engine, now it can find your house and provide an outside view. To make matters worse, people are now putting all of their info on google. Yea, I got my tinfoil hat on but you'll all be sorry when Google kills you with your seemingly trustworthy toaster.

Yah I saw skydrive, but I've been trying to go from my personal email server to gmail, and it'd be a pain to have to use both gmail and live to get things done.

why would i trust anyone with my data? I'd rather just offload to another drive and save it at my step dad's place. it makes me very leery that anyone would trust their data as such, when it would probably be as simple as someone changing the security properties on your share or chmod and your data is now someone else's. I rarely even put up photos online.

no thanks.

Well for me, I'm working with protein/DNA sequences that are publicly available. We do a few manipulations here/there. The number of files adds up, and I don't want to be tied to my laptop or a thumbdrive. It would be much easier to work with it in an online workspace.

I think somebody would be more than 'appy to loan you his H:/ drive. Would that work?

That Gmail Drive progam seems like it would work well; the only problem is that I don't want things cluttering my inbox, and I would like to avoid opening yet another Gmail account. It would be really nice if I could just use my existing Google account to access this legendary gDrive app.

you can setup up rules and such for gmail.

so just set a rule that labels it, marks it as read, then archives based on who it's from.

my question is, does google have something in their terms and conditions that says not to do this? i would be hella pissed if my gmail account got banned...

I suppose I could, but I already bought into the 40gb plan (plus 1gb picasa and 7.27GB for gmail). I mainly wanted it so I could keep hi-res pics up without having to swap things around to add new content.

I don't know why google themselves have not done a "gDrive" yet...

I'm pretty sure Google has stated that using Gmail Drive could result in being banned. I've never heard of it, but they don't support it. I've been waiting for them to offer an alternative and I'm glad to hear they're working on it. I don't plan on dumping ALL my personal documents on it, but it's sometimes very beneficial to have some space on the web to store things that's as easy to access as a drive in My Computer.
