Nice. More things for a virus/trojan to exploit.

Never heard of anything hitting Google desktop yet....

They already have quite a few hooks into the web in ver. 2

You mean you didn't hear about the fact that during Google's indexing processing it can execute malicious code within files?

So any virus that's embedded within another file can be executed when Google Desktop indexes the file. It's a well known issue.

I recently uninstalled Google Desktop and I'm trying out Microsoft's Windows Desktop instead. One thing I prefer about Microsoft is that the search results are returned in an Explorer-like window, with normal context menu options that I would expect to be there. Google's web browser result window always bothered me.

I'm a big fan of google, but I'd have to go with microsoft for the better feel. Google is less of a resource hog though.

"Unless you go to the trouble of configuring Google Desktop carefully, it will cough up your tax returns, medical and financial records, and any other text files you happen to have."
How can this be true? Unless you "configure it carefully"? As far as I know, it doesn't do this AT ALL unless you specifically enable it yourself.

Speaking of desktop search, is Copernic still considered the best that's not Google, MS or Yahoo? I want a desktop search that doesn't require a connection, doesn't try to phone home, doesn't invade your privacy or put sh!tware on your computer, doesn't require launch at startup or running in the background.

In other words, a simple little program that does what you'd expect without being obnoxious about it. I'm sick and tired of programs that try to be all things for all people.
