So i just downloaded the Google Chrome beta, and I have to tell you, thus far I am pretty impressed. It has pulled a lot of my favorite features from all the major browsers and it is fast, fast, fast!

It is WebKit based, just like Safari

It allows you to not only rearrange tabs (like they all do), but also break tabs out and make new windows and then move tabs between windows, like Safari

Has an address bar analogous to the 'Awesome Bar' in FF3, in that it is not just for URLs, but will also search, go through your bookmarks, and your history

When you open a link in a new tab, instead of it being at the end (which most of the the browsers do) it instead, like IE7 will put it immediately to the right of the tab that it was opened from (preferred method for me actually)

When you create a new tab, it will bring up your 9 most visited sites, as well as your recent searches, since they figure that you are opening the tab to do something with it

It has an incredibly minimalist design

Have I mentioned that it is fast?

I really hope they release the OS X beta soon, I look forward to seeing if they will maintain the same design ideas without it being a carbon copy of the windows/linux clients (*Cough* Firefox *Cough*)

they do have instructors on compiling your own osx build on their development site. I was thinking about giving it a try tonight.

yeah, it's nice so far. the two things missing.. adblock and foxmarks. but at the same time, if they stay away from extensions, it would be easier to deploy on an enterprise network and stay relatively secure. this is what keeps us from using firefox and I hate it.

I hate enterprise in general. All their crap security for stuff that doesn't even matter. I'm all for security, but sometimes the IT people go WAY overboard.

And I do want to clarify that I hate enterprise from companies that aren't really enterprise. For instance, I work for a non profit org that employs about 20 ppl, but they lock us down so tight that we can't even access our email outside of their network. And we don't deal with anything highly secure. We simply converse via email. Everything else is done via secure web apps, so it really irks me when I hear "enterprise". :D
[/end rant]

As for Chrome, it's looking great!, but I'm curious about all this EULA stuff that I've been reading... I have to read through Firefox, Safari and IE to see what they are saying.

I'm not a fan of "enterprise" either but it has cut our virus/spyware problems to almost nil. All I want to be able to do is to easily update from a central location all copies of mozilla, as well as lock down the extensions to those only directly from mozilla.

anyway, chrome really eats at the memory w/ the separate processes, heh.

Adblock Plus is the killer app for me...no ABP, no browser usage.

From what i can tell, that just gives you a text-based browser. I'm all for experimental software, but i think I'll wait for the GUI.

Does it have to be ABP and nothing but ABP? If that is the only thing keeping you on Firefox, you should really check out Safari Adblock, which from everything I've heard, is just as good as ABP.

Yea I do understand why IT does a lot of what they do, especially for the dumb people at my office, but I am a web dev, so it'd be nice to be treated like one... and not like a novice computer user.

Yea.. what I don't understand is that you can compile it yourself, but Google won't release it? That makes no sense at all. It's a beta, so just release it like one.

It's not, the last couple times I tried it, it was SLOW. It slowed down page loading while it scanned for ads, instead of being instant. Like, noticeably slow. I use other plugins in Firefox, but I can live without them - ABP is just the most important :)

I gave Chrome a try yesterday...I was skeptical because I really like Firefox, but hot DANG! I really like it! Fast, minimalistic, search+addy bar, great tab management...can't wait to try a release for OS X!

Are you sure it's not something else? I use safari adblock and I can't tell a difference in speed. Sometimes I'll turn it off just to make sure it's still working but there's no difference in speed.

I haven't noticed anything either. Are you (kaido) sure you got Safari-AdBlock? The free one that is maybe 1MB in size?
