WTF? This will never be bigger than PayPal, I'm getting sick of Google trying to do 13124523673423 things, just let me search.

I don't know why, but I feel funny about doing this through Google. Sure they're super uber reputable and everything they put out is choice... but they already have all of my emails on file. So now I give them my CC info, next social security, then my life. Is it just me?

Vote Google for world leader!

OK, I just signed up and used it at DVD Empire. Works perfectly and it has an option to keep your email private from the seller. Plus the $10 of $20 was uber-sweet.

bummer, too bad you can't buy Starbuck's gift cards w/ the $10 off $20 🙁 (they don't seem to sell them on SB's site)

Hmm, but if I have a paypal account, as long as I keep withdraws under $500 a month, there isnt a processing fee right? Google charges for every transaction correct?

Or am I confused?
If you accept credit card payments through Paypal, there is a processing fee for it. If you're only accepting bank transfers or existing Paypal money, there is no processing fee.

Thanks for jogging my memory! I can pick up some pods for half price.

Not sure if it works for Ebay yet. I think they would rather use it with thier Google Base for a while until they build up the user base.
I doubt it will ever work for eBay. I think accepting any form of payment besides check/MO/Paypal is forbidden by the ToS. eBay and Yahoo just partnered up to fight Google, so I really don't see eBay making it easy to use Google Checkout.

it shouldn't be too hard. google can just have some sort of wizard that prepares custom payment links, generates the html, and lets you plug it into your auction. the missing component is the absolute integration that exists between paypal and ebay....but as far as simply working, i don't know why gbuy wouldn't work.

Was there some underground marketing campaign: "trust google"?

But speaking for myself... I have to say... I do trust google.

I think its definately the multicolored name.... its so round and friendly.

It's kind of one of those things... everyone is doin it so why don't I try it out. They seem to make everything so easy with no catches................................ yet.

Looks at eBay's logo... Hrmmm....

I think people trust google because just about everything they put out rocks. And the Ben & Jerry's attitude.

I understand how to shop and buy things through websites and use google checkout, but how do I send money to individual people like who I buy something from on FS threads? Or can you send payment to merchants only?

I prefer yahoo mail to google mail.
Its mail. I need a "Compose", "To", "Subject" and "Send" button. I dont need a calendar, I dont need it to call my phone.
I just need mail. Yahoo fits the bill.
ok... your reasoning... makes no sense. Yahoo has a calendar too.. you don't have to use it, same w/ google. gmail has a compose, to, subject and send button too. I can understand you not liking google and prefering yahoo, that's fine, but use a logical argument.

and what does your cell phone have to do w/ anything
If you want to sign up for GMail and don't have an invite, you need a mobile phone capable of receiving text messages. Their fruity way of stopping dupe accounts, ignoring the fact that you could sign up the first one with your phone and then invite yourself to another 100 accounts.

its free, Google's run by two young 'uns, they have a "lets kill the capitalists and give free stuff away!" attitude, and they're frickin' sweet.

Google isn't free. Our company pays millions a year on adwords.

Let's kill the capitalists by pretending to be communists while using capitalism and become bazillionaires woohoo!!! lol all you idealistic fools.

Unless they make person to person transfer free (like Paypal was back in the day) they won't make a dent into Paypal's business.

Maybe that will shut everyone up about PayPal's fees. Since the vast majority of people here have never spent a dime on adwords they'll be paying $0.20 + 2% which isn't that far from PayPal (though slightly cheaper).

Guess what people even the almighty Google won't absorb credit card fees for you.

Yeah, this doesn't seem as good as it was made out to be. I am finding a hard reason to switch over? And like JS80 said, unless I can send a seller on Anandtech a payment via Google Checkout, I don't have much use for it.

From what I've seen and read, this is *not* designed to be a substitute for Paypal -- Google Checkout is more of a merchant gateway, like Authorize.net, or Paypal Website Payments (Pro).

There's no "switching over" to be done... look at the service before you complain about what it does and doesn't do.

Holy crap I just made a quick analysis on our company....we can save $500k/year on CC fees...(we have a huge adwords campaign).

might be useful for my friend who runs a small business

People...it's called CHECKOUT for a reason. It's simply a merchant service. It's not intended in any way, shape, or form to replace PayPal. If you don't sell things, this means nothing to you.

I'm going to have to do some research about this. My company might be able to save a lot of $$.
