How long does it take for web pages to be cleared out of Google's search engine cache? I deleted something from a website this morning and I noticed that it still shows up in Google's search engine although the link to this item goes nowhere.

Just a guess, but I'd imagine it'll be there until the spider crawls your website again. Even then, I'm not sure it'd go away.

It's certainly not instant.

Isn't this partially the point of Google caching? To make it possible to view web pages that are no longer available? I know I have used this feature a couple of times.

Cool. Thanks for the answer! Now the million dollar question is "what is Google's crawl frequency?" A free cookie to anyone who knows this. 🙂

Depends on how much traffic you have and if you do anything to attract Google's attention. You can get most websites crawled / recrawled within 24 hours. If you're really good, you can get it crawled within minutes.

The "website" I deleted it from is Facebook. Based on your response I'd expect it to be crawled quite frequently since Facebook gets millions of hits per day. Thanks!
