I'm in love with this new Google feature that let's you block out results from specific sites. Goodbye ExpertsExchange.com.

If you haven't tried it, click on a result from a site you don't want to see, hit the back button, and you'll see a new option under that search result entry.
 
This is will be a big help to block all of those sites that just clone MS newsgroup threads or aggregate useless links to what I'm really looking for.
 
I think this may be a game changer. What good are dollars spent on obnoxious SEO techniques when people can wave their wands and banish you from their search results?

Glad I'm not the only one. I hate that site. For some reason I never figure out that I'm clicking one of their stupid farming links until after I've clicked it.

Lol, I always felt the exact same way!

Google has always had the ability to filter out sites (something like -sitename.com in the search). The option to make is permanent is awesome.
 
I just use AdBlock filters to hide all their annoying links and hidden answers. It's not to bad when you hide 95&#37; of their page content. 🙂

Yeah -sitename.com was pretty useless. It takes more work than hitting the back button to get off the site and back to the search results.
 
Doesn't seem to be implemented on google.ca yet or I'm missing it.
I would like to get rid of ExpertsExchange.com among some others as well...

What makes you think this is a good idea?

I did a search for my own website on Google today, and I saw a "block all results" link by it.

All the other websites listed in the search didn't have a "block all" link.
My website is not spam, it's a business website.

WTF Google? 😡

It might be a bug, I think you should only see the remove link if you visit the link and go right back to the Google page. As for why I think it's a good idea... I think it is self-evidently a good idea.

The link only shows up if you actually click through to the site and go back to Google.
 
Expertsexchange hasn't been a problem for me. Last I looked, when you browse with NoScript and scroll to the bottom, the answers are still there. 🙂

What I'd really like is a way to hide all pay-to-view entries in Google News. If I had more time and interest, I'd write it as a Greasemonkey script.

Ah, thanks for that explanation. I thought Google was trying to unfairly block my website for no good reason.

Maybe if there was a "block all results" link on all the search results, regardless if the link is visited or not,
it would be less confusing.

I didn't think this was a good idea, if it meant Google is using the information to permanently remove
a website from the search results if enough people clicked on the "block all" link. It might be your website!

It's almost as if Google's search results are turning into a big Youtube comment section.

It is a GREAT idea that google could lower the rankings of websites that get blocked by enough people. I would rather have good information come up than crap.

I doubt it's some crowd-sourced algorithm... just personal blacklists. You need to be signed in to use it.
 
During the trials where this was only available using the extension, they said they were using the results to help them tune their search algorithms, but they were in no way using it to outright block any sites.

Now that it's available to everyone on google.com, they've again issued a statement saying the results this time around aren't even being used to tailor search results.

Just personal black-lists, as mentioned.
 
It would be great if it would also affect search results. Maybe not if it's blocked by less than a couple thousand people, but if 3 million people decide to block something, perhaps it shouldn't appear on the first page...

Well that's probably the de facto system anyway, i.e. if that many people block a site they probably hear about it internally and may elect to take a closer look. It certainly does seem like an attractive feedback loop to implement. So much so that I think there must be some specific reason why they haven't. One that comes to mind is the possibilities it opens up for gaming the system. I imagine 'Anon' could have some fun with that, and without much trouble either.
